Seriously considering getting a Tacoma for my next truck. Will likely be working in a major city so a smaller truck would be nice. Definitely think I could downgrade from a 3/4 ton.

Pretty set on a used, extended cab. Is the I4 enough for pulling a small flat boat? Will likely never need to pull a glass boat or anything of that weight.

I would think it has to be. I don't think any truck would have trouble pulling a little flat boat, especially aluminum.

JB, I know this ole boy that divorced his wife b/c she was bad to drink and sleep around. A few years later, he remarried her.

Even that isn't as bad of a mistake as buying a 4 cylinder truck.

I'd give it another think.

I haven't ruled out the V6 but the mpg just isn't great. But I still like the idea of a smaller truck

The lack of torque in the 4 banger is the killer.

What's the diff in highway MPG?

Plus, Tacomas are solid-gold on resale, but the 4's don't do nearly as well.

Buy new. Toyota resale is high. You won't save much buying used

I'm finding pretty new ones (~30k miles) for around $20k? I think they're a few thousand more new

You buy Toyota trucks for longevity not gas mileage. Trust me, I'll never buy anything but Toyota now but you have to look past fuel economy. Lack of repairs down the road will offset the crappy mpg's.

4-banger will be fine. Toyota makes a torquey little engine and with the newer automatics you'll have plenty of gear to work with. Some here forget that torque converters also have a torque multiplication factor too, you won't notice a small boat behind that truck.

Ramps get slick, things happen.

Doubt he'd have a serious issue if he kept a sharp eye on weight.

Still, when you're towing, MPG is a moot point.

You want the real Toyota dependability everyone talks about? Get you a truck with a 22r. Better looking and more reliable than any Taco on the road

I had a 99 2.7L single cab 4wd 5-spd that was bad arse. I don't know about the reliability of the newer ones, but I'd buy one as a second vehicle in a heartbeat. They are beasts in the mud.

I pulled stuff like 3 four wheelers, 21ft Whaler, etc, with no problem. Torque was not an issue.

My supercharged V8 F150 knows about slick ramps, my base model 4-banger, 5-speed Ranger is a bit easier with that respect.

Have any of you looked up the tow ratings? Fact that the I4 and V6 have the same towing capacity unless he finds a V6 model with the Class IV tow package. He's pulling something that weighs less than the average jetski couch these days.

Hey, I love my little 4 cylinder BJ-40 Land Cruiser. It can pull, just very slowly.

Coming from an 05 Tundra I decided I would give the Tacoma a chance when looking for my new truck. Test drove v6 and just couldn't get over the difference in power when stepping on the gas. Ended up in a new Tundra. Couldn't imagine going with 4 cyl even to save gas.

I will say I drove a v6 Tacoma right after college and it was plenty enough power then. I've just been spoiled by the v8 now.

I have the v6. Best thing I could've done. I get 19-22 depending on driving. I can tow up to 6000#. Boat launches don't give me any problems. I pull 18x54 godevil almost every other day. So do yourself a favor and get the 4 liter v6

You have an optional tow package to tow that much? If you don't have the Class IV hitch and upgraded parts then your V6 has exactly the same towing capacity as the 4-cylinder.

Get the 6 cylinder. You'll regret the 4, and your gas mileage savings won't be as much as advertised, ESPECIALLY when towing.
