I am looking at Tacomas as a daily driver. Manual, 4x4, access cab...don't really care on bed length. Ideally would like a V6 but not sure if it is necessary.

I hear somewhere around 2005-06 the engines were changed to run better on regular gas instead of premium, is this true?

I also have heard of paint peeling issues on some around the same year.

If you were to buy a used Tacoma, what year would you look at for a daily driver and occasional off road, roughly 10-12 times a year?

my dad has driven tacomas daily for years.
he sells dental supplies and has territory spanning from Alexandria to New Orleans to Biloxi and routinely has put well over 200K on his tacomas with only regular scheduled maintanence.
decent gas mileage. tool box across the back for some service work, reliable, and also enough power to pull tractor and 4 wheeler to hunting camp, etc.

Just got rid of my 08 Tacoma. About 50% of the paint was off the roof and 75% of the paint gone off the front bumper and it wasn't from wrecks. Engine was fine. Will always love that truck. I just needed V8

I have an '07 prerunner that has been pretty good. Recently had to change the u joints at 137000. I regularly pull a 18x54 GD boat year round. Haven't really had any issues. Paint on the other hand is a different story. Truck has always been outside so paint has faded on top of cab. I would stay with the 4 liter in V6 as I've heard the 3.6 that came before it was horrible on gas.

It's why I'm asking. They are popular! I would like to avoid the paint issues though.

You're going to play hell to find a manual 4x4, any bed/cab. They exist, but when I was lookng for a 4 door 4x4 manual I simply couldn't find any used. I had to buy new...and even then there were none in LA, TX, MS and I had to go east to that region. Good luck. The effort is worth it.

I drove to a dealer in Mobile, who took delivery of it from a dealership in Florida while I was standing there. They didn't even clean it. This IS NOT how you get a deal on a truck.

I've found that you can get what you want or you can get a deal, but you can't get both.

they switched to a chain motor in 05.

Don't know what you're talking about premium fuel

It was told to me like the issue was a rumor. I may have mixed the wording, or maybe they were talking about E85.

But thank you for the responses so far!

I drive an '05 Tacoma prerunner access cab to work every day, and have driven it every day since High School. Have put 100k miles on it myself, got it when it had 50k. I'm about to trade it in and get a new 4Runner, but I love it. No paint issues, or knock on wood any issues really. It goes anywhere I need it to go, but the back end is pretty light for a truck so it spins sometimes. Shouldn't be an issue for a 4x4 though.

2013 4x4, auto, 4 door, short bed. It is a great truck. I have 51k on it and no problems at all.

The problem I see in getting one in the age you're looking at is the price. People want a fortune for those trucks. I have seen a lot with bad paint so, maybe you could find one that is solid and then get it painted.
