surf fishing next week at Orange Beach...

Heading down to orange beach on Saturday and was thinking about trying my had at surf fishing with my father and brother in-law. Father used to be a big bass fisherman, so all we really have is older bass tackle. Any advice on spots or what types of rigs we could have some fun with? Looking for something easy to setup that would be pretty versatile...

Ive had zero success in OB. The only place Ive seen fish landed has been at Alabama point near the jetties. Its a good spot for kids to relax and play around nearby in the sand while still being able to fish. Although it is always eye opening when someone drags in a 8ft bull shark next to kids playing.
Sams Bait and Tackle is a bit out of the way but they will always have good advice and reports.

Use a drop shot rig setup at the public bridge over there at night under the lights. Use fresh shrimp from publix, not the prefrozen type. cut into chunks and toss is out. Make sure you can feel the bottom and adjust your weights according to how strong the tide is. Never has failed me from catching fish anywhere water is moving. Might not catch monsters or keepers, but enough to have fun with.

Get some pyramid rigs or spider rigs, circle hooks, squid, shrimp and mullet.
Wade out as far as you can, chunk it out and 9 times out of 10 something will be on the line before you get back to the sand.
Hardheads, shark, flounder, pompano, rays, etc.

I go down the beach to Perdido every summer with the family. We catch a lot of fish casting right off of the beach with frozen shrimp and squid by letting it sink to the bottom with pyramid weights. No need to wade out there or anything, they are right there in the surf. If you hit a school of whiting you will have a blast and catch more fish than you know what to do with. We also catch decent size sharks off the beach by paddling the bait right past the sandbar/drop off.

white trout, spades, pigfish, black drum, occasional speck, reds, hardheads, mangrove, channel mullet, etc.. Normally we stay at the Caribe and fish from their fishing dock since it has tons of moving water all the time. Pier at night though at the State Park is good as long as you have a moving tide. If it's slack you can forget about it.

You can buy a surf setup for like $20, I would leave the bass gear at home.

It's about time for the large schools of bull reds to cruise the beaches. Probably a pretty good shot at them with shrimp off the beach.

I was there over the weekend. There were a few guys fishing in the mornings, they all were fishing with dead shrimp (from Publix) on the bottom. They were catching flounder, channel mullet and sting rays for the most part. It's pretty funny watching a guy in chest waders standing in ankle deep water with a 10 foot surf rod reel in a 8" flounder as if he were cranking down on a marlin.

If I wanted to try and get into some redfish, where would be my best bet? Alabama point? Something like a mirror lure/spoon or would shrimp still give me a better shot?

Did it a few times. Bait of any type available on a stout leader with a good sized weight. No telling what you'll catch, but hey, it's fishing.
Watch the birds, they'll grab you bait if not covered onshore.

If you see a sand flea grab that sucker and sling it out, it's like crack out there.
