I have two stumps that are within a few feet of the house, so I don't think i can get a stump grinder in on them. They were there when I bought the place. What's the best way to get them out? pickaxe? shovel?

how much space between the edge of the stump and the house? If actually a few feet, you wont have any issue getting a stump grinder to it.
how big are the stumps?

You'd be surprised where they can get with a stump grinder.

One of them is not that big across, maybe 10-11", but it's only maybe 18" away from the house. The other one is a good foot and a half across, but it's a 3-4 feet away from the house.
How much does it cost to get someone to come grind one?

It would be probably be at least $500 to get them to come out for that little stump. It's a pain to bring those big machines around for a small job. It cost me about that for 2 stumps. Cost me $1000 for about 15 stumps. They like quantity

Sounds like prices in your area are about the same as I have found here. It seems like they want $500 to just show up for 1 or 2 stumps, but once they are on site the biggest exspense is already covered.
Last time we had a bunch I rented the grinder and did it myself. I think I paid $150 for a weekend rental.

If you're in Lake Charles, the guy I used is $80.

Locally owned equipment rental place. I don't know what you would have local.
The place we used would let me rent it for Saturday, but since they were only open for a half day and closed on Sunday, I didn't have to have it returned until Monday morning. Essentially got a weekend rental for a 1 day rate. We cleared over 400 stumps at my dads place over a few months renting it a weekend at a time.
