Heading over there Friday for 6 days, just me and the SO. We're already going white water rafting and horse riding. May go ride 4 wheelers, too. I have a guide booked to catch some smallmouth bass on Lake Cherokee one of the days.

Any other stuff I need to do while over there?

About a 45 min drive to Cades Cove. Several hikes to waterfalls and old cabins/churches. And if you drive around the last hour before dark you'll see hundreds of deer and probably bear come out into the valley.

I would say hike leconte and stay in the cabins, but that's booked up like a year or two in advance. Could still do it, but thatd be pretty tiring.

I like the Smokey mountain brewery in town. They have do trivia at night and the beer is pretty good.

Other than that, go to the park and ask the guides in the visitor center. They will tell you what looks pretty this time of year.

Go tubing in Townsend. Also go in the cavern over there.

Fly fish for trout. If you don't like being a ninja to catch little brookies and bows, some browns in the lower elevations. Head over to Cherokee and fish their stocked trophy section.

Also it's Cherokee Lake, because of Cherokee Dam. Douglas Lake is also very nice and good fishing.

Do you want to do all the cheesy tourist crap like Dollywood and pancakes? Or do you want more nature style activities?

Go to Newfound Gap and hike North on the Appalachian Trail to Charlie's Bunion. While you are at Newfound Gap you should go ahead and plan to visit Clingmans Dome.

With all the rain I imagine the waterfall hikes would be worth visiting (Abrams Falls in Cades Cove is popular). Another one of my favorite hikes from the Cove is Gregorys Bald. The flaming azaleas usually bloom in late June so you will be late, but it's still a great view (12ish miles round trip). I believe Sun AM and Wed AM the Cove loop is open to cyclist and walkers only.

Fontana Dam is one of my favorite stops but its going to be an hour and a half from Gatlinburg. If you visit from the foothills parkway you will end up on the Tail of the Dragon. It's 318 turns in 11 miles and very popular with the bikers and sportscars. As you know wjat to expect it isn't too bad. I usually just make a loop and travel back east of the Park and return to Gatlinburg via Newfound Gap.

If you want to venture north Max Patch and Hot Springs are worth a visit. Hot Springs has a great spa at reasonable rates.

Enjoy your trip. Be safe.

You can actually go from Cade's Cove down Parsons Branch, which is an awesome gravel road. Beautiful drive that dumps you off in the middle of the Dragon (Tail of the Dragon is a store on the road, not a road.). It's also not 318 turns, that's just a marketing number from the size of an engine in Pete's truck. Parsons is a one way road though, so have to find another way back. Deals Gap can be a bit much for a tourist that is unprepared to basically be on what can be almost like a closed course two way race track on some days. Especially in riding season and if they aren't skilled at curvy roads.

No we're not doing Dollywood, sticking to outdoor stuff. The guide I got actually guides on Douglas and Cherokee, but he said Cherokee is better for smallies.

Thanks for the advice on Cade's Cove, we'll have to go check it out.

Cades Cove is great, but will be crowded this time of year. Hike to LeConte even if you don't stay it is a good hike, take the Alum Cave trail.

You can also hike to rainbow falls it will be nice with all of the rain we have had and you can see how the forest has recovered from the fires last year.

One thing we always do is eat at the Best Italian. Not the one on the parkway, but the one that is off the parkway near traffic light 8. Order the garlic rolls and the calzone. The calzones are as big as a football. We have had other customers take pictures of them.

Summer can be very crowded in Gatlinburg, but it sounds like yo are going to do the things where the crowds will be less. Have a great trip.

Perfect timing on this thread.
Ill be headed up there myself on Saturday for the week. I got roped into Dollywood one day but the rest I want to spend it in nature hiking and seeing the falls. Cades Cove is on the list to do as well. Id love to find a spot to fish that is close but not sure that will happen. Was also told to check out the ski lifts in Gatlinburg. Yay or nay on this?

Sorry to piggyback rballa, but I was about to start a similar thread.

There is a good zip lining place near Pigeon Forge called Fox Fire Mountain. We went there a few years ago in the spring and it was fun. They have a series of about 8 or so lines of varying length down the mountain.

Lots of fishing in the area. Trout fishing in the city is single hook and park is single hook lures or flies - no corn, worms, etc is permitted. The city actually stocks some of the creeks outside the park. Fly fishing the small streams in the park is incredibly fun because you end up boulder hoping. The native brookies in the park are also pretty damn good eating around a camp fire.

Douglas Lake and Cherokee Lake are some very good bass fishing lakes as well, but I don't do as much of that.

The ski lift is eh, the gondola up to Ober is probably a bit better of a scienic ride.

If you got the time and want an all day car ride. I highly recommend taking the drive to Franklin, NC. Eat lunch at Caffe REL (closed on sunday/Monday) inside the Hot Spot gas station in the center of town and then make the drive to Highlands, NC. It's a long drive, but it's all very pretty and the part between Franklin and Highlands has some of the prettiest waterfalls in the area. Highlands is also a very neat little town to walk around the little shops for any ladies that might be with you.

Cades cove is a must. Get there at daylignt, spend a while.

Hike some trails, abrams falls, groto falls, laurel falls

Roaring fork motor trail, hit it about an hr bwfore dark

Take an ultra light reel.. fish in tons of streams, small rooster tails work as well as canned corn. They stock stream n gatlinburg every thur, so fridays are fun there.

Go to the old mill and apple barn (eat a fried apple pie at apple barn cider mill)

You will love rafting...i would skip the atv ride. For horse riding get there early, try to beat everyone and you may get your own ride with just you and your SO and guide

Pancake pantry and crockets breakfast in gburg are a must

Tubing in townsend is nice and relaxing.

Beautiful ride in down wears valley rd.
