I've never owned a pistol, would like a revolver. This would be for plinking, side arm while deer hunting maybe, etc.
Which caliber/version would you recommend? I'm thinking 22 lr or the convertible?

Ruger SA? Blackhawk stainless .357 Mag. or a Vaquero in .45LC

For someone new to handling/shooting a handgun, I'd suggest a 22LR for all the same reasons I suggest a 22LR as a starter rifle. The Ruger Single Six is a fine single action. I know a number of posters here are fond of the Heritage Arms single actions as well. While the convertible sounds appealing, I don't really find them very practical. Compared to 22LR, 22 Mag ammo is harder, more expensive, much louder and has little improved performance. OTOH, you might find a double action revolver or semi-auto in 22LR move fun than a single action; they're certainly easier/faster to load.

The Ruger Single Six is the finest 22 handgun that I've ever handled by far. If you're learning to shoot handguns, I highly recommend it. Hell, even if you're a veteran of all firearms, it can be a very fun shooter. I'm a fan of the convertible cylinder guns. Maybe they aren't practical, maybe they are, but 22 mags give you a big boom like experience without the recoil of a real big boomer. Yes, 22 mags are more expensive and possibly harder to find, but no one is forcing you to shoot them every time you shoot 22 lr. That's the beauty of having 2 cylinders.

Thanks guys. Presented both sides to give me something to consider.

I carry a Ruger semi .22 for snakes and such. Would love a single 6.

I have a single six also the Heritage Rough rider. Both are convertible. They both shoot extremely well but the fit/finish of the Ruger is way above the Heritage but it's also way more expensive.
The Heritage is the gun that I throw in the ranger when I'm going hunting/playing. I'm more careful with the single six.
I hate the "safety" on the Heritage.

Can you elaborate on the safety? Something more economical I'm not scared to scratch isn't a bad idea.

It's just a stupid "flip" safety bar that won't allow the hammer to fall on the firing pin.
Don't like the ergonomics of it and think it's pretty worthless on a single action.

I use the .22 mag cylinder more than the LR. For killing shite.

Many a hog in a trap caught one behind the eye from mine. Had a sweet little bird head grip Heritage that got stolen, but still have one with a long barrel I carry for critters. I keep the mag cylinder in all the time.
