They are pretty rare where I live.

They are much smaller than the blues and more shy. On the rare occasions when I see one, I feel like it was a good day.

Are they the same where you live ?

Nope... Bass fishin in Virginia sounds dangerous.

looks similar, but your photo seems like a smaller bird, and a bit different coloring maybe?
As I said, they are rare here, so I don't see them often and not for a long time at a glance.

Usually when I see them, they are flying farther away, but the colors are beautiful.

Yes

They are super common on the gulf coast. They are only on the northern gulf coast in the summer. I see them mostly at night, as they love to feed off of dock lines, kinda perched like in your pic.

Really common here. One of our posters always thinks they are least Bitterns.

Not sure what you're looking at because that pic is definitely a green heron.

I spooked one the other day when yaking way up a creek. Instead of taking to the air the SOB dove and swam by me,even passed directly underneath my yak.
One of the darndest things I've ever seen.

Only thing I could figure is he was so engrossed on a hunt I was on top of him before he realized I was there.

I cant imagine a green heron can swim. Maybe so, hell, I didn't think my exwife was a raging loon either.
