Would you say that your hobbies make your life bearable?
I really love my life, job family and god. But what if there was no hunting and fishing?
Was talking about this the other day with a buddy about how much of our lives revolved around hunting and how much we loved it and it kept us going and looking forward to the next year.
Saw that post and thought man I dont know what i would do if I couldn’t hunt or fish. Everything I do even this forum revolves around the outdoors.
So what would you throw yourself into if hunting and fishing went away??

I wonder what people do in major metro areas like in China. They don't hunt, fish, hike, play golf, off road race, drive cars, boat, go to sporting events, etc etc.

Basically any of the things that we live for....what do they do? As far as I can tell they spend a lot of time on the internet.

According to my wife, hunting and fishing are the only things I love.

It’s funny you say that. I spent 2yrs working in China and actually was there when i joined TD out of boredom after just reading post for years.
It was one of the saddest things I saw, as I saw people who didn’t believe in my god or any god and have no real structure of fun to look forward too. My screen saver is pics of all my hunts and my kids kills and trips to the beach and lsu games and fishing trips and such. All the nationals would stare in awe at my kids with pics of guns and dead deer or pics of us snow skiing and make statements like “ all yall do is enjoy life” or “ it looks like y’all just have fun year around”
I would tell them and explain that i worked to live and that’s what made me go across the world was to have more fun and more memories.
They lived a miserable life and it was evident in our conversations how lucky we are to have what we have.
Ohh and yes they stayed on their phones playing role playing games I mean hours and hours, and ping pong they were some BA ping pongers.

Fishing was always something I did when there was nothing to hunt. When I moved in 2020 it became a major PITA to fish. I got obsessed with gardening. When I wasn't able to hunt as much as I do now I was obsessed with homebrewing. Before that I played chess 4 or 5 hours a day.

A constant through all of it has been working out/fitness. I have waves of being halfway interested in it to being obsessed with it. If I have nothing planned on a Saturday morning I'll run trails or ruck with my dog. There's always something I can do even if it's just beating a tractor tire with a sledgehammer for a while

I really want to get the F out of Louisiana. The only things keeping me here are family and my job.

When I was at LSU I had a wildlife professor that said that’s what’s wrong with US inner city folks. Said humans evolved hunting and gathering and now that they don’t get the chance to do that it brings out a violent side of them and they commit crimes and kill one another. This was in the early 90’s before LSU went woke.

I couldn’t imagine being couped up in a high rise apartment in a big city with no chance to get outdoors and enjoy wildlife and nature.

ETA: and when I say “enjoy”, I mean get to go out and catch and kill a good bit of my family’s food.

I have many hobbies.
If I couldn’t do half of them I’d have a really hard time.

The last couple of years though my hobbies mostly revolve around me working at my land and getting it ready to hunt and general cleaning up stuff. I have loved it and constantly thinking of new things to do out there.
I’m really never there when I’m not working on something but I’ve so enjoyed it that I have no issues missing some of the other hobbies.

ETA: my job is a fairly high stress job even though I’m sitting at a desk all day. It’s a commission pay and building relationships.
Working on my land is a release from that stress.

Family for me my parents are 81 and 78.

My kids are 23, 18, and 16.

And my family owns around 300 acres of prime hunting in 3 parishes in north LA.

Otherwise I’d get the frick out and not look back. I can move anywhere for my job or get another 1.

On the water or in a blind are some of the only ways that I can truly relax. It would be a real struggle without them. I still enjoy a few other hobbies (travel, hiking, etc), but not at the same level as those two.

I've gotten to meet a lot of people in unique places around the world, through working. So many of them are blown away by the idea of hunting and often even fishing when we get into those discussions.

My Hobbies are a very important part of my life; in fact, I wouldn’t probably survive what I do, without them. Everyone needs a release from what we call humanity. It’s like taking meds for depression, without taking meds, and when it’s quiet, on the lake, or in the woods, that’s when my soul is in Church..

I find time on a boat really lowers my stress levels. Whether it’s fishing, cruising, or pulling kids on tubes, it’s a dopamine release.
My youngest brother was a charter captain and died on his boat a few years ago. We didn’t go on the water for a few years because it just felt weird. We are back out there now and it’s great.

My life would be "bearable" of I didn't have them but hobbies definitely give me something to look forward to and an escape I enjoy.

I get home from fishing on a Sunday, and by Monday afternoon I'm checking Windfinder to plan the next weekends fishing trip. My life revolves around Fishing. I even try and schedule work around fishing.

When the weather is bad I feel lost, but I use that time to bring the wife somewhere nice. (Pro tip - don't tell her the weather is bad and just say you wanted to spend the weekend with her)

only thing keeping me in Mobile is my oldest daughter . 2 more years and i’m gone. I would leave yesterday for Montana. North or South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho or Nebraska.

I just like being in the outdoors, preferably alone.

Hunting and fishing gets me out there and gives me goals to achieve, but I also enjoy just kayaking and hiking/backpacking. Its my mental de-load.

Anything can bring joy. Sitting around talking to family in the living room, watching a show, sitting outside watching the kids play. Even at work, joking with co-workers, I fortunately work with lots of funny people who are a lot like me. When home alone with not much to do like today, reading ya'lls posts, working on my truck, watching the birds brings a good time. Go simple, anyone can go simple, makes life more enjoyable. You don't have to enjoy life by jumping out of a plane or hiking a mountain, if that's the only way to enjoy it, something is wrong.

Yep, work is a paycheck to finance fun. Off to Saskatchewan next week to whack waterfowl;)
Best thing that happened to me recently was work didn't want me to expense a phone, now i have a work phone that i look at from 7-430, at other times its a paper weight.

Yes. My hobbies are so integral to my mental health if I don't do them regularly I start going dark. I need to Sail, Hunt, Fish, Hunt arrowheads, metal detect, mushroom hunt, watch football, and drink too much pretty regularly.

Sailing and Hunting both hit the same nerves. You get in the boat and start getting it all trimmed out and eventually you're just listening to the water and buddies and you'll sigh, and all that stress you've been accumulating comes off. I'll make it another week or two if I can get to that moment. Same thing with hunting and fishing.

Golf and disc golf. Wait, I already do those

The older I get, the more I drift away from hunting. Had I not fallen into a really easy blind, I would not duck hunt at all, and I only deer hunt now if I get a certain invite.

Fishing keeps climbing the ladder even though I could not catch a fish without Livescope.
