any of you guys ever do any catfishing in lake pontchartrain? I've pulled in some decent size gafftops but never caught any blues or channel catfish. Did a little research and stumbled upon this article.
I imagine some of the big ones from the Pearl and Mississippi make their way in from time to time.

During the winter you can catch enough in the Tchefuncte to almost sell commercial.

I know some people that fish there with soft shell crabs for blue cats.

Interesting read have caught at bay house in Matagorda Tx. We were wondering how the hell so many catfish got into the bay.

There are definitely a lot of blues/channels and some big mud cats in and around Lake Pontchartrain. I grew up on Irish Bayou and would target blue cats from late October - February. The colder the better. While you can definitely catch them in the lake the marsh and bayous around the lake will hold some numbers of very nice cats.
My favorite technique is to find any bayou that has relatively deep water (at least 6' but the deeper the better), has a good tide running through and is draining off of a large flat or out of ponds. They tend to stage in the deepest water closest to this area. Also look for sharp bends in the bayou where the tide is undercutting under the marsh bank.
For bait I will use a combination of things. I like to use cocahoes, mullets or quartered crabs since this will also catch specks and reds as well as cats. Chicken liver has been the best producer for me as far as finding catfish goes. (cut pogey is also great but i have a hard time getting fresh ones in the winter)
One key is to move around a lot. I will throw out 2-3 lines wait 10-15 minutes then move to the next spot. In most instances there are only a few cats around any one area - at least where I fished. I will rarely sit idle more than 20 minutes unless i am getting bites.

I know plenty people run bird lines for catfish in Lake P. I caught a 10 lb blue doing that a few months ago.
Also, the damndest thing happened the other day. I was at the mouth of my river coming in to lake P, and a school of fish pops up under me on the fish finder. I'm thinking some kinda bait fish. I toss the castnet in, and it's a school of channel cats. Bunch of pain in the arse little ones, and 3 2-3 lb keepers. Was not fun trying to empty that net.
