have never had to have one for myself. always had one available to me if needed. not what i would call an electrical genius, but i'd like to get something to at least run my fridge and a few lights. the a/c would be nice, but i assume id need to get some shite wired or something to be able to run it.
any recs on a something above the min needed? 5500-6500? i assume anything with a honda would be okay? maybe generac?

Would a 5500 be able to run a 110v/30 amp supply and a fridge?

Honestly, any cheap generator will work as long as you take care of it. I haven't seen too many crap out being taken care of and run intermittently. You don't need to spend $40k to have power for 2 days

If you want A/C, get a small or a couple of small window units

I agree, but get a honda if you don't want to wear earplugs and want better fuel consumption. Fuel isn't that easy to get for a storm.

The Honda I have is a 5500 that will run the frig and lights or run a small ac, tv, sat dish. One tank of fuel(about 2 gals)will last about 12 hours feeding the above.

Problem with a lot of gensets are that people don't put them up right. Once you finished with it, change the oil, fill the fuel tank and add staible to the gas. Run it after adding that if you don't have a fuel cut of valve. If you do have a fuel valve, cut it off and run it out of fuel.

Another note. Keep on hand at least 1 gallon of oil. Change oil out every 50 running hours in a storm condition.

Is there anything else I need to make sure I get? Like a certain kind of extension cord or something?

My no name POS from Sutherland's works great. I even had it start back up after sitting for years with no maintenance. I just had to run a little seafoam through it. Oh, and I am probably the least handy person on this board.

Be careful how you store it and turn off the fuel. Our 6500 at work was stored in an unconditioned shed, in this extreme heat we had, without the fuel shut off. We took it down yesterday to service it and the oil pan was full of gasoline. We can only assume that the cause was not shutting off the fuel and it sitting in the heat we have been having, causing the gas to expand and get past the seals. Dunno.

I still haven't fricked with this almost brand new Generac that I've had sitting in my shed for about 2 years. Just needs a cleaning. Maybe I'll get to that the day the storm gets here

Go do the dishes and let the men handle this

Really, pull it a couple of times, spray some started fluid, and pull it some more. Then report back
