So my brother has convinced my mother to go deer hunting for the first time....

However, he did so with caveat of her using one of my guns. Let me preface this by saying she has never shot a rifle before. She is 5 feet tall and maybe 120 lbs. the gun my brother "reserved" for her is my Tikka .270. She is also a 62 year old woman with minimal osteoporosis, who also happens to take a blood thinner (not aspirin) every day. She wants to hunt on thanksgiving morning and afternoon. I'm a bit worried about her shooting a caliber larger than a .243. Am I overthinking this, or should I let her "have at it"?

She might need to work he way up, providing she can handle it...

Try some of those reduced recoil loads and a recoil pad if a .270 is the lightest you have.

The lightest I have is a .22 LR. From there, it goes to the .270.

You don't have a H&H 600 nitro express you can let her use?

I'd try and put her on a .243 or smaller if it was my Mom.. Either way, good luck to her!!!

If its all you have for a deer rifle, use the reduced recoil loads as suggested. It should make it manageable.

This brought back memories of hunting with my mother. When she hunted there wasn't near as many deer around, she never killed a deer but shot at a nice buck three or four times with a single barrel.410. We were not very serious hunters back then usually just had a some buck shot in my pocket while squirrel hunting. Probably one of my biggest regrets was not getting her a deer.

Reduced load .270 feels closer to .243. If I had a relative as you described, I would let them shoot .243 or 7mm-08.

Good for mom for being willing to give it a try.
I'm working with my 7 year old now.
So I got some reduced recoil loads for practice. Plan to pull a switcheroo during the hunt. I figure with the adrenaline she's not likely to notice the change in recoil.

My .270 is the smallest big game rifle I have. It goes up exponentially from there. It is my favorite rifle for whitetail, though. My brother shoots a .308, and his alternate is a 45-70. Hence, he chose my rifle to volunteer for her.

Reduced recoil .270 rounds and a slip on recoil pad will really help to reduce the kick. Or if you have a nice stand with room you can buy a shooting stand that just about locks the rifle in place. Almost like something you would use for sighting in a rifle
