Give him at least 6 hours and preferably wait til daylight if it will be cold enough. Explain the situation better.

All gut? No liver? If all gut with a rifle I'd just wait till morning. 6-10 hr to become septic and die if the blood loss is low.

Good luck on finding him. We use a cur dog most of the time and really don't have a lot of success recovering when they are really hit far back

Central Louisiana. I shot the deer at 6:38 am. He didn't run far and milled around. He wheezed one time. I waited thirty minutes after I didn't hear any noise. I had no blood or hair where I shot him. I walked in where I last heard him. He wheezed when he got up. I assume I gut shot him. I know I should have waited longer. I just wanted everyone's opinion on how long. Did not find deer. Did have blood where he laid up but no blood trail.

I'm not familiar with this wheezing sound from a deer that's been shot. My best guess is you blew his snout off causing the wheezing.

Sounds like you missed baw. Little guys just got a cold with this crazy weather.

I gut shot a decent buck a few years ago in late primitive weapon season as a guest at another club. The guys in the club convinced me to let him pay overnight and everyone in camp helped track the buck mid morning the next day after their hunt. We found him and it turned out to be the best buck they had killed in the club all season. I hated the shot and the waiting, by it turned out to be a real cool experience with 10 strangers helping me find my deer.

Without a good dog, you will be lucky to find him.....when they bed up, if not pushed, they usually are dead within 100 yards of that first bed....they also tend to stop dropping blood after they bed up
If you backed out after you bumped him, he may run another 100 yards and bed again. Leave him for 8-10 hours and he should be dead within 100 yards of his next bed
