I've heard the joke about going on a snipe hunt for years...but being from SWLA I know what snipe are.

What's the origin of that joke? I mean, snipe are real birds...and there is a season for them.

I hate to say it..but I don't get the joke. Maybe I'm too literal (too much of an engineer).

This.

Wasn't a boy scout thing for us. It was just our old Marine uncle fricking with us. He took us out in the middle of the woods with a bag and sticks. Told us he had to go back to camp to grab something and then he circled around us in the woods and scared the shite out of us. Ended with a few kids running into trees and some pissing themselves. Good times.

The joke normally starts with someone being left on a levee. Woodcock could be substituted for snipe in the joke and it would have a base in truth. Here is an actual video of woodcock being captured at night.

the way I heard it was you set someone out in the dark with a burlap sack and flashlight. The snipe would follow the light and then he would trap it in the sack.

We had it done to us in 5th grade or so. They gave us sticks, and a plastic bag and we all went out in the woods. Before we knew it the adults were gone.

We start making our way back on our own and they scared the shite out of us right at the wood line for everyone at the house to see/hear.

A lot funnier now than it was then.

There's snipe hunting with a pointing dog and a shotgun. And there's snipe hunting where a kid is left in the woods at night holding a bag waiting for a snipe to run in it.

Jump shooting them solo is fun too.

It's where the term "sniper" comes from

yes good to eat, as I recall they're a little whiter meat than a dove bird but about the same size. Been a while.

I really miss snipe hunting. Had some great hunts at Catahoula and some wet bean field near my house.
