I'm having a long day and feeling lazy about posting. I'll copy and past from email I just received but here is a graphic of the proposed season length:
My guess is sector separation with Louisiana's non compatible season will net us appx 9 days. woo freaking hoo.

Red Snapper Season Projections
The Council received an update from NOAA Fisheries Service on the red snapper season projections for 2015. The final 2015 recreational red snapper season dates will be announced in May prior to the start of the season. The season length is dependent on the approval and implementation by the Secretary of Commerce of Reef Fish Amendment 40 - Sector Separation and the state water red snapper seasons.
Below are projections based on various assumptions of catch rates, average red snapper weights, and if Sector Separation (the division of the recreational sector into a private angling component and a federal for-hire component) is implemented.

9 days is way better than what I've been reading on here

This whole thing seems like a movie made in the future where we no longer have a representative democracy.

that's because the original run had a projection of 1 day (back when they were finishing up discussions on Amendment 40).

Yeah. I thought the season would be closer to 9 hours.

does it really matter? no one gives a shite and follows state regs anyway. screw the feds.

Can someone explain the reasoning behind the ridiculous short season? I've only ever fished inshore but all I hear is red snapper are plentiful and hard not to catch when fishing for other species.

In short- The way the fish are counted is screwed up and the way the recreational sector catch is counted is screwed up.
One would like to assume the commercial catch count is accurate.
Those numbers plug into a big formula which then allocates a total catch allowed, then that's further evaluated to create the # of days of fishing allowed.
If my short summary is wrong someone correct me.

not the most eloquent way to put it, but yes

yeah those guys are super regulated and require logbooks.

this is how I explain it to people

Trying to be short with it. I am just glad I sorta understand it.

you are one of the few unfortunately...other than that its pretty much

That makes sense, thanks for the explanation

just to make an even more well rounded reason...with some species, encountering an angler catching said species is difficult by Federal standards...
a much bigger issue is trying to estimate how many trips an angler takes on a regular basis. (which is how the feds perform their effort survey). They expect anglers to remember the previous 2 months of fishing activity, as well as everybody in the household.

frick Roy Crabtree and the NMFS right in the arse. I'm following the state regs and will fish all summer. Suck my balls feds.

Not in the least. It's basically a plutocracy.

There certainly aren't any outlaws in the commercial fleet....

The least they could do would be to set the season days on Saturday/Sunday for four weekends with one having an open Monday. At least that way the recreational guys would at least have a shot at one decent trip. Hell with 9 consecutive days you get one weekend since the season will more than likely start Monday June 1st. I read some stats put out by NMMA that 95% of registered boats in the USA are under 26 ft. I would venture to say that only about 1-2% of people with a salt water license actually fish for snapper. Couple that with a short season mostly during the week, unpredictable weather that could cause most if not all that would participate stuck at the dock and then to top it off not conduct fish counts on the oil platforms. What a bunch of useless asshats we have in charge of this.
