I have been to this trail a couple times, but first time in August. I had never seen snakes until today, two actually. First one crossed the trail ahead of me about 10 feet away, went into the water. Second did not move until I got about three feet from it, scared the bejesus out of me. I think both were the same kind, 2-3 feet long and all black. So, questions:

1. What kind are they?

2. Are they poisonous?

3. Is this snake high season at the spillway?

This is what I think both looked like, but I am probably wrong. It says it's a crayfish snake.

Thanks in advance

Thanks.

So can I assume any snake on that trail is non-poisonous?

How can you be sure it's non poisonous?

There are 4 poisonous snakes in La. Learn those and you'll know when you see one.
In order of prevalence:
Cottonmouth
Copperhead
Rattlesnake(timber/canebrakes)
Coral

Can't see the belly but the original snake looks like a mud snake or milk snake.

Choupiquesushi and I were woodcock hunting there years ago. I was a cold morning after a warm spell in January and found a small water moccasin in the middle of the trail. He was warm enough to open his mouth, that is till the #8 shot removed his head...

look for a triangular head.

If the head is shaped like a triangle it's poisonous. Cotton Mouth(Moccasin), Rattlesnake and Copperhead. Coral snakes are very rare and have pretty color rings, straight head, small and have a small mouth and have to bite you in a place like the web between your finger and thumb.
There's another pretty ringed snake that is non-poisonous. Remember red and yellow kill a fellow-the colors on the head of the coral. I've never seen a coral but often see the other 3.

There are only two types of snakes that I have ever came across.
1) Rattlesnake
2) If it ain't a rattlesnake it's a King Cobra
I live by this rule

Pretty much. Except I've only came across rattlesnake on the lease in MS, and copperhead in the yard once or twice. Mostly moccasins. Shitloads of them in the swamp.

I think the rule of thumb is, if you aren't sure, treat it like it's not venomous.
Or is it the other way around?

If it was black it may have been a water moccasin. There are a lot of king cobras near the spillway, so I would think twice about where you ride.
