I'll try to give the Reader's Digest version:

Have an outdoor garage that I keep my Hustler mower in. A skunk keeps getting under the mower deck and wallowing out a hole. First time I saw her, when I started up the mower she came hauling arse out from under and exited thru a hole under the wall. I have a gravel floor. The hole in the gravel is big enough to put a large cantaloupe in.

I filled the hole up and boarded up where she came in. However, she's back again but can't find where she came in this time. Dug another hole but no sight of skunk when I started the mower this time.

Anyone got an idea on how to get rid of the thing without having to use a gun. Any anti-skunk chemicals out there I can use? Was told mothballs might do the trick.

Also, is she digging the hole to have babies in?

Thanks.

Trap and kill, or just .22 subsonic...

I'd think the only problem with that is she might spray everything around and then I have a gawdawful smell for several days.

The gun option is probably the answer if I get to see her again. Problem is, I'm a terrible shot. I'd probably miss and hit something with gas in it and blow the place up.

I think that smell would last longer than several days. And I doubt that you could blow anything up by shooting it. But if you don't think that's a good option, try the mothballs, maybe that would work.

It try leaving your mower out of the she'd for a couple weeks. Take away its cover. Maybe it will find a new spot.

You don't know me. I was shooting at a cat about 30 years ago with my 357. Missed the cat but I killed the compressor on my air-conditioner.

Will try moving the mower if I see evidence of her again. I'm hoping that now that it's warmed up she might be looking outside for a home.

Thanks.

Sounds like the safest way to go.

A lethal bullet shot does NOT stop them from spraying. Don't ask me how I know.

A lethal bullet

Well that leaves me out right there. I've never been sprayed, yet, but I had a dog that got sprayed twice. Cleaning her up was bad enough.

This will chemically destroy skunk odor, not just mask it. It will remove the smell from a skunk pelt, will work on anything.
1 quart peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp dawn.

Mix those right before use and make sure you keep away from eyes. Not chemically stable so must be used within a few hours.

We had a skunk getting inside our storage room where we kept fish feed at our hatchery. He got in a box of fish feed and we threw a tarp over the box while he was in it and then we hauled it about ten miles away. It never sprayed. He never came back.

If you still lived close to the "old hood", and was still alive, I can assure you, that you'd have practiced your accuracy plenty.

HS,
My son in law did battle w/ skunks inside city limits of Shreveport for a couple years. He live trapped them then either tried killing them or relocating them. He started by filling up the holes w/ concrete, but they just dug new holes. Drowning didn't work (they ran out of the trash can when he removed the top). Carbon monoxide poisoning from car exhaust didn't work. He live trapped and relocated 15-20 skunks w/o getting sprayed. The only time he got sprayed was when he live trapped one and shot it w/ a 22 LR. He later read that when they die their muscles relax and they spray. He couldn't go around the trap for 3 days w/o getting a headache. The only thing that worked was setting up an electric fence. The first night he set out the electric fence, a skunk sprayed the house's siding, leaving a stain that's still there. I don't recall that he ever tried moth balls. Good luck w/ your fight.

I have some experience shooting skunks in traps and the ace to shoot them is behind the shoulder like a big game animal. I have learned that a head shot almost always gets a spray.
