Trying to wade through all the options. Criteria: something easily concealed, reliable and accurate. Budget about $600 or less. What works for you?

The single stack glock 9mm has been nice. Took a little while to get a holster made for it but once I got one it makes for nice sneaky heat.

I would get a Ruger LCR and pocket the difference. If you insist on an automatic, Kahr.

A semi automatic will almost always be easier to shoot accurately and will most likely give you more ammo in a thinner package.

Kahr CM9/CW9
M&P Shield
Walther PPS
Springfield XDs
Glock 43

Just to name a few...

That's pretty much the top 5 in my opinion. If I had to list my top 5 that would be it unless I subbed the Ruger LC9-s or Sig 938 for the cw series or XDs.

Why limit yourself to a single stack when a G26 can offer 15rds in a form factor that is, practically speaking, as easy to conceal? More comfortable to shoot too.

Most of these semi automatics will hold 7 rounds and the revolver holds 5 rounds. Not that big of a difference.

Reason I went back to my 19 after trying out the 43.

My 1911 and 92FS are better shooters for me but my carry has been a 3rd Gen 26.

I still need to get a 33rd mag or a 50rd drum for it though.

Completely forgot about the LC9s Pro and the 938. The 938 is a bit foreign in this discussion being a single-action-only, hammer-fired, metal-framed gun. But it's still a good one.

I encounter this all the time and my reasoning is this...

I can't reasonably expect the average concealed carrier to carry something slightly less comfortable.

Sure, people like most people you find on this board would have no problem concealing a double stack compact. Hell, I have an M&P9c in my rotation that holds a nice 12+1 capacity. But for me to expect the average person to carry the same gun with the same level of slight discomfort isn't reasonable. If I point them to something that they can conceal easier they may be more likely to carry. And I would rather more good people be armed than leaving the gun at home. I make sure to stress that a larger gun is easier to shoot though, no matter how marginal that difference is. This leads me to my next point.

This also opens the cans of worms of smaller, thinner guns being more difficult to shoot, as you pointed out. But looking at FBI crime statistics and the Department of Justice's study on defensive handguns, I can reasonably believe that the trigger won't be pulled anyway.

One should never carry without the psychological and physical ability to be able to pull the trigger. But that doesn't mean that every scenario warrants a trigger pull. If a purse is snatched and the dude is hauling arse there's no reason to shoot. If there is a knife to a love one's throat, you can bet your arse you should shoot, but you may not have a clear shot. The possible scenarios are endless.

Ask anyone who has shot someone in self defense if they would rather have fewer rounds. When talking about guns on an equal playing field in terms of size (say a subnose 38 versus single stack 9mm), I'm going with the one that gives me more ammo every single day of the week. This is also the reason I favor the M&P Shield over the Glock 43. The reason I don't own the Shield is that I purchased the CM9 before the Shield had been released and it has been a great gun for me.

I have these with or without safety plus an extra 8 round mag, three total, for $30 less. Just throwing it out there.

I'm infatuated with the Colt Mustang, just not sure about going with a .380.

Anyone have one in their collection? I also thought about getting a Walther, since I love my PPQ.

I think you are confusing the Shield with the Smith & Wesson Bodyguard, which is a .380 "pocket pistol".

The Shield comes in 9mm and .40S&W. So, what are ya waiting for?
