Honestly, I wouldn't mess with the red dot on top of the magnified scope. Unless you're shooting competitively. You will never use that in a real world situation. I have been through Aimpoints, EOTechs, and long range scopes on my ARs and the one I like the best is the Vortex PST 1-4. It has the power and clarity to reach out to 200 yards, but still has the eye relief to quickly engage close range targets. IMO it is the perfect optic for the everyday short to medium range AR platform. My best advice is don't be cheap when it comes to optics. They fall under the category "you get what you pay for" more than any other item I can think of.

Vortex PST 1-4.

Your best option & bang for your buck out there right now. On 1 power it has fast target acquisition much like a red dot.

This gun is for shooting pigs. The past two times at my lease I've come across pigs under 50 yards away in groups of 8+. I'm thinking the red dot would be great for these situation after the first shot and they scatter.

There is zero reason you shouldn't be able to hit a pig sized target at 200-300 yards with a good 3moa red dot. The US Army qualifies with man sized silhouettes at 300 yards with their Aimpoints. Zero at 50 yards which is a 200 yard zero with your red dot. Shoot pigs.

What he's saying is that a scope turned down to 1x power is about the same as a red dot since there is no magnification. I think his justification is good and I agree with him - simpler is better.

But in the end it's obviously your call. This is 'Merica anyway...

About the same except for the long eye relief and parallax free optics which is the main reason you want a red rot over a scope.

I didn't say the red dot has no use. I said the red dot on top of the scope has no real world use. You can get a 1-4 scope and it will do everything a red dot will at 1x, and it will do everything a scope will at 4x. You will have the best of both worlds. The Vortex PST even has an illuminated reticle that looks similar to a EOTech.

I thought the same thing. That's why I never went with a 1-4 scope before, but I was wrong. The eye relief is way better than I thought. I keep my stock and head positioned the same as I would with my Aimpoint. The scope relief is the same as the Aimpoint. As for parallax free, I haven't noticed a big difference. I also haven't shot it in any support positions yet.

To the OP, do what you think will work best for you. I just wish somebody would have talked me into one of these 1-4 scopes a long time ago. Best thing you can do is go into your optic shop and look at what they have and make you decision off of that.

I second the Burris Fastfield II 1-4x with the red dot on top. That set up looks really sweet.

I put 20 rounds through it today. 10 at 25 yards and 10 at 100. Went and bought scooe mounts because the red dot reflex sight sucks.

Eventually I'll spend money on a 1x4 with a BDC redical. Eventually add on and get a quick attach magnifier

I'll throw another bone for the 1-4x crowd. I've used aimpoints, eotechs, acogs, etc etc

I'll keep the 1-4x on my gun.
