Could be iqf shrimp that have been defrosted and starting to go bad, what exactly do you mean by heavy black on the back stripes? Pic?

If you are getting several every time you buy, then it's probably not black tigers. They aren't that abundant yet.

It's probably milk shrimp or cotton disease. It's a parasite that grows in shrimp that makes the shrimp turn black and white. I usually throw them away if it affects(makes it turn white) the meat.

Cotton Disease

Defiently tiger shrimp. We mainly catch them when we work on the outside (the gulf) and but I think we caught maybe 1 or 2 this year while working in the bays.

I'll take a pic tomorrow evening when I get home from work, really don't think they are iqf as I bought them directly off the boat and even saw them coming directly from the hole. I don't believe they are tiger shrimp, and most of the shrimp is white, but black stripes from the collar on down. They did seem a little stronger than normal when eating them, and the ice water in my cooler darker than usual.

I think what you describing is what's called a cotton shrimp. Which is a regular brown or white shrimp with the cotton parasite.

FWIW I've never had more than 4 or 5 in a 50lb batch. Most trawlers throw them back as they catch them.

That is a Black Tiger Shrimp. They are farm raised in So. East Asia mainly. They also raised some in So. Texas and once in a while they get out into the gulf. not uncommon to find them in the gulf ( not really common either), considered an invasive specie. They ok to eat but I don't care for them.

I would say yes, but the black isn't as pronounced.

Similar question, had a can wash up on the beach yesterday,, had lots of growth in it, when I threw it up in the beach two little shrimp like critters fell out, but they had claws. One bigger than the other, were they lobster? About an inch long

They aren't all black. I've seen all kinds of variations of white and black for cotton diseased shrimp. I would not eat them by the way.

They're not tiger prawns. Like someone else said, shrimpers aren't catching near enough of them for you to get 4 or 5 in 50lbs. They'll get one every now and then, but not like that.

As someone else also said, you got cotton skrimps.
