Go buy a bunch of peroxide and a squirt bottle. A fine mist of peroxide will turn white when it hits blood. Great for when blood trail gets faint. If you hit like described its dead. I have seen double lung go a long way. Not often but deer are weird.

OP did you look in the creek?

when they come out of the creek you need to look for tracks, the blood has been washed off and it make take a little while to pick back up.

you could have shot that deer in the liver though and it is probably dead by now.

Go find him.

deer hit perfectly bleeds out in 7 seconds. Not going to go 300 yards.

If his leg was forward you hit nothing this morning, and got some brisket bleeding, which is what it sounds like. Red red blood, no bubble, not on anything especially high and puddles occasionally as he stops and tries to figure out what the hell happened.

Probably a nice puddle right before it went away. I am just guessing.

if his leg was back or neutral you did not hit him behind the elbow, unless you are really really high up a tree. I would bet you hit him too high if you didn't hit him in the brisket with a too forward shot.

I've seen a doe hit perfectly run 300yds. You never know.

if it ran 300 it wasn't perfectly hit, it was adequately hit though which is fine too.

write up but I'm just wondering what I am doing wrong.

Sound like great shots, you need a good dog! Throw $500 at a good dog and it will never happen again. Get a good dog! And in the mean time get a good dog!!!

I have found five deer with a dog which would have never been found by a man before the coyotes.

On those big expanding broadheads, shoot them mid body, or at least back from the shoulder. The shoulder and rib spaces are too congested for that much surface are of blade. Had same problems with my Rages, but now I shoot them a little back from the shoulder, and they die in sight, usually..

You're right. A field point will kill a deer just as well as a broadhead that cuts a 2" hole.

Anyone know if the OP had any luck with the dogs? I am guessing not since no updates with pics.

Never did get to go back. I ran out of time waiting on my buddy with his dogs and had to leave to come back to work. Sorry it took so long to get back and post again. I've been driving for 10 hours. Ain't slept since 4:30 yesterday morning.

I agree nothing to do with broadhead. I shoot cheap muzzy from Walmart and haven't lost one yet. You need to aim further back then you think, especially if leg is back. If you got double lung the deer wouldn't have run but like 50-75 yds.

If the arrow broke, as you say it did, I'd say that you hit solid bone. Likely either a shoulder blade or leg. I had this happen with a doe a few years ago. I actually heard the arrow hit solid bone. About 3 inches of the arrow broke off with the broad head still in the deer. I tracked her about 300 yards until the blood completely stopped.

Keep at it man. It sucks to lose deer, but it happens. Keep practicing, pick a spot, and aim through the deer. You'll get it.

Please don't tell me that you think there's a difference in muzzys from Walmart and muzzys bought other places.

Lulz dude, ask any real bowhunter. Anyone who has spent any serious amount of time in the woods bowhunting deer and seen a lot of deer shot. I've seen over a hundred deer shot with a bow in my life. I can think of two does off the top of my head that were shot perfectly. Totally collapsed both lungs. One ran almost 400yds and the other ran over 200.

If you really think the broadhead has nothing to do with killing a deer, you can't be helped. I'm not saying OP shot the wrong broadhead or made a bad shot or anything like that. That being said, I've seen (and had) better results from Grim Reapers than any other broadheads. Slick tricks coming in at a close second. Notably on bad shots....because that's when it matters.

I know there is no difference. Just saying you can get them anywhere and they are super cheap.
