Don't be in a rush, wait till winter and then ask us/them questions when you need to.
Buying used is a bitch and time consuming, but it can save you a lot of $.

I'm pretty much in the same boat (no pun intended) as you in experience, wants, and price range. In looking the last few months I've discovered I'm probably looking at a minimum $13k to find something decent. Don't be in a hurry, a deal will come, but don't pussyfoot when something comes along. I did and missed out on a 22' nautic star (200yammy) for $14,9.
Slight hijack, what do y'all think about bay stealths?

I was in the same situation as the op. I wanted a boat very badly for a long time but I had no boat experience.
After I got the boat I went to a empty parking lot and learned to back it up. Then I went to a little used boat ramp on a weekday and unloaded and reloaded the boat many times.
My first few trips I took a friend who was a boat owner, but after that I have loved the boat and enjoy it.
I will never go another day without being a boat owner.
Also, get insurance.

But whatever engines crabbers are buying these days. Serious

What is the best engine to buy?
Posted on 8/22/14 at 7:05 pm to hansongrad
It's going to be a preference thing, just like trucks. I say get what crabbers get because they run those engines hard. IMHO Yamaha is tops right now

In order this is what I'm looking for:
Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki
Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki

I would put Suzuki ahead of Honda but good list
Posted on 8/22/14 at 7:11 pm to JAB528
I have no personal experience with Honda's, but have heard good things, and a lot of crabbers use them.

Whatever you think, but we run a Honda that gets unbelievable milage considering to me we are under powered.
I like Yammy's too and have one, but if I live long enough I'll put a Honda on the wee boat.

Wait until you have to find plugs or have to get one worked on.

We have a local dealer and have updated things recently locally so I'm not sure what you mean.
I will however order back ups for all yearly change overs online.
ETA, it's the Yeti of outboards.

I bought the boat at the link in 2001 when it was called logic. I repowered last year with a 150 Yamaha 4 stroke but for the price (16,000) new it was a great deal. It's a bit pricier now but the boat hull is nearly indestructible and because the entire boat is molded plastic it is virtually unsinkable.
I fish marsh, bays, lakes and will go out to the 7 mile rigs out of fourchon on a good day. I love this boat but like everyone else said it will cost time, money, and effort to maintain. Just another option.
Triumph 190 cool bay

Get a boat, but understand its work and cost money. That being said I've had my bay boat for 2 yrs now and love every minute of it. Before I had a boat I started by fishing the banks, Elmer's and the State Park in Grand Isle. My son and I enjoyed it and wanted a boat to do more. I had never owned a boat all I heard was "there's only 2 days you're happy u have a boat, the day you buy it and the day you sell it!"
I bought a 2009 Nautic Star bay boat and we freakin love it, we fish anytime we can. We've taken to Orange Beach a couple times on our vacations. My son and I love being on the water, love to fish and I know I'm not as good a fisherman as some but we catch more than our fair share and have a blast learning areas together. It's work though, I clean it front to back after every trip, take care of the maintenance and it wasn't cheap to get it stocked with everything I need! But it's provided life long memories for my son and I and we look forward to our next trip everytime were heading home from our last trip!
That being said my boat is only 19' and if I had it to do over again I'd get a 22' + bay boat. If you buy a boat with a big monthly note you may regret. Find a used boat you can buy with cash or with a really short term note. If you don't use it enough you won't be upside down when you sell it, if you love it sell and move up a to a newer or bigger boat.

I have a 22' Blazer bay with 150 2 stroke and couldnt be hapier.
I would reccommend a 21-22' especially if you want to fish 4 people. However a 18-19' will be sufficient for what you want. I have a preferance for Yamaha, but as others mentioned suziki and Hondas are good motors too. Starting to see evinrude get back in the game as well as mercury too. A 150 is plenty of motor for 22' or below, however a 200 would be better.
As far as brands I obviously like blazer bay which I feel is one of the better bangs for your buck, Nautic stars are very nice and both are plentiful in the gulf south.
You should be able to find a really nice rig for your price range, jsut start looking at whats listed and how quick it sells to get an idea of market. Deals can definately be had, mine is an '04 and I got it for $13.5 so if your patient and understand the value of rigs then you'll get a good deal!
Good luck and good fishing!

Don't buy a boat, make friends with someone who has a boat.

Go with a few reputable guides and ask a lot of questions, not just about fishing, but navigation , safety, etc
