Hey OB,I’m in the market for a CCW. I know Smith sells a ton of Shields, and everyone I know that has any firearm from the M&P line swears by them. Problem is I’ve never fired one.

I had my mind set on an XDS in .40. I shot a friends XDS .45 a few months ago, and after two magazines I was impressed by how well it shot out of such a small frame. Shooting a 1911 always felt like a cannon.

I absolutely hated the Glock 23 and Glock 19 I tried. My hands just don’t mesh with Glock geometry.

But the Shields are about $50 cheaper and I’m pretty sure Smith is still running the $75 rebate thru the end of the month. Will I be disappointed with a Shield purchase, or should I go with the Springfield?

Shield in 9mm with no thumb safety is what you need to get. Do not buy a .40. The shield is the best shooting subcompact I've shot, and I've shot them all.

If you want something a little bigger, M&P 2.0 Compact. It's basically a G19 with a better trigger, better ergos, and better factory sights

I like everything about my 9mm Shield (w/ Apex trigger) over my bro in law’s XDS 45. That’s my only experience between the platforms. And team 9mm over 40s&w all day.

Shield with Apex trigger, Hyve mag release, Hyve mag extension, and trijicon hds is about as good as a carry gun gets.

Forgive my ignorance. Apex Trigger? What’s the difference? Is this something I’ll have to take it to get done?

Dramatically improves upon the stock trigger. Depends upon how handy you are, but it’s a fairly simple install. Hardest part is removing the rear sight to get to the striker block.

take it to a shop since you probably don't have a sight pusher. that's the hardest part.

it is a huge upgrade and will make you a much better shooter than you actually are. I have the flat-faced version with an RMR on my full-sized M&P and it's as automatic as it gets

Just looked. I guess they dont. Must have seen the Glock 43 one then. Springer makes good shite too obviously though.

Don't buy a concealed carry gun based on price or how it feels shooting rounds slowly. Buy one on how it naturally draws and aims. The Shield does that well for damn near everyone except for Downshift

All XD guns are like holding a plastic brick IMHO, but that is personal preference. I also hate all Glocks past Gen 3.

FWIW, you don't need an Apex trigger. There is barely any difference. A stock Shield is perfectly fine (unless I got a magical one)

This is 100% true. You do not “need” an Apex trigger. Nobody here also “needs” to hunt, to fish, to live in the size house they do, a/c, cars, etc.

It has nothing to do with “needing”. It does however greatly improve the trigger on the gun.

I have one and installed it myself. It was easy except for the rear sight

I don't get why y'all are dissing on the Shield's trigger. Get yourself a Ruger LC9 then you'll have something to bitch about.

One is a doa and one is striker fired.

Kinda apples and oranges.

Bodyguard is the worst concealed carry gun I've shot in the past 5 years. I'd rather throw a boomerang

My dad actually had a lot of trouble with his Performance Center Shield. Kept having major FTEs where the slide locked forward, and they were hard as hell to clear. Never had that problem with my regular Shield

Instead of the 40 have you looked at the shield 45? Slightly bigger but just big enough to get a half pinky finger on the grip with the short mag. Not bigger enough to make a difference when carrying. Improved grip texture. Improved trigger. Recoil isn't bad at all. 40 would have been way worse.

Three Shield 9's in the family, two with Apex triggers. All have run perfectly. Also had one Shield 40. Failure about every other mag and snappy when fired. Got rid of it.

For a little extra there is a ported Shield with a close to Apex trigger.

so after you factor in $120 for the Apex kit and gunsmith fees, why not just get the Walther PPS M2? That will be ready to shoot right out of the gate.

Agree about the LC9, but check out the Ruger LC9s (or 9s Pro) and forget buying a Shield and immediately needing a new trigger. I MUCH preferred the LC9s trigger over the Shield and the Glock 43 (can't speak to the Walther or XD) plus it was the least expensive of the three.
