Your tank will become more buoyant at the end of the dive

While this is somewhat true, it's not the main reason that you:

quote:

let air out of your BC as you ascend.

The air in your BC and wetsuit expand as you ascend, displacing more water, thus creating greater buoyancy. The change in air mass in the tank occurs gradually over a dive, and water pressure doesn't affect it in any way. A well-trained diver will adjust his BC along the way as the tank lightens up.

Plus, I'm sure you will have a computer that will beep and tell you if you are acceding too fast.

Bad advice. Dive computers are great, but you cannot depend solely on them

True, and good insight. I should've gone into more detail, but I was exhausted last night.

Not to hijack your thread but has anyone here been diving out of Panama City? Any recommendations? The wife and I were thinking about doing a dive there in 3 weeks. We both are fairly new divers.

My comment was poorly worded. Of course you don't just depend on your dive computer.

We take our students to PC Dive Center for open water checkout dives. Plenty of easy sites in PC and the Goliath grouper are awesome to see.

Thanks.

I use my GoPro on every dive. Maybe I can record a Grouper.

The wife and I are going to PCB at the end of the month to obtain our advanced open water cert. Anybody know some good places to go diving that are closest to Louisiana? Don't want to keep driving to Destin/PCB just to make a diving trip for a day or weekend.

Oh boy, that was my predicament about 15 years ago. I even tried contacting landowners where some beautiful freshwater springs and sand pits were located but to no avail. Had some inkling of a plan to set up a Vortex Springs type of operation somewhere here, even if just a nice lake not with the whole cavern/cave thing, but never came to fruition.

Yes, St Andrews park has some decent locations, esp the jetties, just have to catch it at the right time.

350' dives on my third dive of the day kind of stupid shite.

Is that a typo? 350 feet?

No, I did it when I was a kid and used to enjoy nitrogen narcosis. "God protects fools and drunks" It was a very stupid thing to do.

Like I said before, I don't like diving deep. 30 feet is ideal for colors and bottom time. I don't like having to use a light source to see colors.

Honestly, St. Andrews isn't the best place for a novice. Tides can get pretty strong there, and with waves crashing exiting onto the rocks can be a little hairy at times, not to mention the occasional invasion of urchins. I was with a class of open water students while I was working on my search and recovery cert and basically had to rescue 3 of them. I love the site, but I'll never be caught on a dive with novices there again.

That said, I've see my only king crab while diving there.

Good points.

Me and my bud had to do a water to rock extract one time and luckily were in top shape physically else it could have been ugly - 4-5 ft step ups with the full load.

Damn and I felt guilty for the occasional 150 ft deep bounce dive...
What kind of air were you using?

Atmospheric

I learned it from my Mexican dive instructor.

Go down, turn around, and barely make it to the top with 300 PSI (500 being what you should have at minimum). Very stupid, but I was trying to make the OP feel comfortable about rapid accent/decompression and giving him confidence in knowing set tables were very forgiving. In no way, was I endorsing what I did, and highly recommend NOT exceeding dive table limits.

Jesus, yeah I don't recall the specifics but seems like oxygen toxicity could be an issue at those depths with regular air, as opposed to air mixes.

water to rock extract

Luckily I had another advanced diver with his wits about him. He was able to get onto the rocks, I found a good little shoot that I could use to pull them through. Then, one at a time, I would grab them, lay on my back and swim my arse off to get them to the spot, he'd basically pick them up out of the water. I can't remember the exact number but it had to be 6 or 7 of them. The 2 girls he and I were dating at the time did the best by far. The fat, lazy fire men were a struggle. By the time I was done, I could barely get myself onto the rocks.

On a side note, this came after one of them felt a sinus squeeze at 70 feet and bolted to the surface. I chased him and caught him at about 20 by the fin and did a controlled ascent before rejoining the class. Needless to say, I save him some serious pain and was about ready to kick his arse after I got back to the beach. I decided then that I didn't want my dive master or instructor certification.

I knew a guy from Sulphur who died from that.

I've had my skin tingle and have/had joint problems.

nitrogen narcosis doesn't really get to me that bad. Past 200' my brother doesn't even know which way is up. I've saved him a few times from diving down to the abyss. My dad (brought grease pen and pad) can't even add 2+1 at 150'. It's been 20 years since I pulled those stupid stunts. I'm older and much wiser.

I switched to diving with great white sharks for a dangerous thrill. Nothing like diving with a shark that wants to really eat you.
