Scope Recommendations

I'm looking for some input on a scope to mount on my marlin 336 in .30-30. This November will be my first deer hunt (yeah I know tardy to the party) so I'd like get the rifle squared away. Scope ring/bases Recommendations would be very helpful too.
ALSO: Those of you that hunt or have hunted with a .30-30 before, what ammo would you suggest? I've only shot cheap federal soft points through since receiving it from a family friend that passed away a few years ago.

Budget? Also, as far as ammo go with Barnes VORTX 150 grain TSX.

Nikon or Leupold in 3x9 is fine. Pick the best version that fits on your budget.

Don't know if they make a fixed 3 power with a 9mm objective.

I bought my sister a Burris Fullfield 2, 2x-7x, and Warne bases and rings last year for her Marlin 336. She likes them a lot and killed 2 deer last year.
Of course, she killed a boatload of deer with an old Nikon ProStaff on her 336 before that, but the low light capability on that scope was pretty bad. She's a deadeye.
I have a Burris Fullfield II and a Fullfield II E1 with Warne rings and bases on a 30-06 and a 280 . They are both 3x-9x/40mm and are both good scopes, especially for the money.
She shoots Hornady 150gr. American Whitetail loads. For her usual range (150 yards and less) they work great, and shoot consistently at or under 1.25" when sighting-in.

I forgot to mention that, but I'd like to spend no more than like $2-250. I don't want a whole lot of money invested as I'm probably gonna buy another rifle as my "primary".

FWIW I just looked and OpticsPlanet has Leupold VX-2 2-7x33 and 3-9x40 scopes on sale for $239.99 and $249.99. Both of those are great scopes for the price range in which you are looking. I doubt that you will need anything more than 2-7x33 for a 30-30, but to each his own.

Thanks for the help y'all, I think i figured out my setup. The Burris Fullfield II 2-7x35mm previously suggested with a DNZ one piece mount/rings combo. Thanks to free shipping and a coupon code I have from optics planet, it'll be right at $199, ordering in a couple weeks.

If you absolutely must put a scope on it I would consider a fixed 3X as the highest magnification needed, if that is not enough scope the deer is too far for you to be lobbing rounds at anyway with a .30-.30.
I say this as a far of both Marlin and .30-.30's, great gun and caliber, they just have their time and place.

On a 30-30 keep your scope on the smaller side. A scope in the neighborhood of 2-7x33 is about the biggest you need. Mount it as low as you can. If you have see through mounts, toss them in the garbage. Don't let anyone tell you you can't shoot a deer at close range with a scope, because I've shot deer at less than 5 yards away with a scoped 7 mag.
As for ammo, I prefer the old traditional round nosers. I use 170's but I don't know if there's any advantage or disadvantage of 150's. See which one your rifle likes and use those. My rifle likes pretty much anything I feed it, and 170 grain winchesters are the most popular, so that's what I use.

I'll second the suggestion for a fixed power scope, either 3 or 4 power.
I do have a question regarding your choice of a30-30. Why buy a cartridge that was developed in the 1800s, and are probably factory loaded to function in rifles that were made back then without blowing them up. I know they've killed loads of everything but the cartridge has limitations.

It's limit is distance. If I'm hunting a spot where I know I can't shoot over 100 yards I don't feel limited. And it will kill deer farther than that.

Don't overlook the rings and base. Make sure you get something nice. I always use leupold rings but I've always had a bolt action. Probably gonna run you $60 so consider that in your scope budget.
These look really solid as well and may be a good option.

I shot these for a couple years with my 336. They worked very well. Killed a 165 hog with them. Then for some reason last year gun wouldn't Shoot them worth a darn, bullets were all over the target, no consistency at all??? I went back to Core Lokt.
I still shoot Barnes in my 30-06 and 35 Whelen.

Scope- 2-7x32 Leopold or Nikon. The 2-7 scopes are so perfect for a .30-30; especially if you hunt in thick stuff.
Ammo- anything your rifle shoots well except hornady leverevolution. I've shot a couple deer with them with horrible results. Jacket separation and no exits on any of them. I shoot 170gr federal blue box.

It has limited useful range, but it's plenty adequate out to 150 or so yards, depending on the person shooting it. The cartridge is well suited for the rifle, which is where the appeal is. You buy it to have a slim quick pointing affordable lever action, not to have a .30-30
I've laid down a pile of deer with mine, most of them died within eyesight, only one shot farther than 50 yards.

I use the same thing for my daughter. 150 yds and in and its a dead deer. Its my dads old Marlin that probably hadn't been shot in over 20 years. Perfect rifle for a kid. Smaller, little recoil and honestly I wouldn't let my kids shoot past 150 yds anyways because of the minimum experience.

The only time we have ever had to retrieve a deer my sister shot was when she switched to Hornady LeveRevolutions. Those things didn't expand worth shite inside 100 yards. By the time we found a buck she shot at 90 yards, with one lung hit, he was so hopped up on adrenaline that it took 2 shots from my 30-06 to put him down at close range. I never felt so shitty killing a deer in my life, and she went to the American Whitetail loads the next day. I have also avoided a ballistic tip bullet since then.
Unfortunately, my Steyr 280 shoots the Federal Premium BT's better than anything. I am trying to find another load for it.
