Considering getting one for my daughter as her first vehicle.

Any years to be wary of?
4 or 6 cylinder?
Not sure if I want Ext Cab, or 4 door. She actually said that she didn't want 4 door because she didn't want a bunch of friends piling in to ride with her.

Looking for something relatively easy to get around parking lots in, and still be safe.

Other suggestions?

You'll pay top dollar. A Nissan will be much more reasonable.

But much harder to find, and also, like the Tacoma, holds its value better than anything else on the road.

You should be able find what you want on autotrader, I see access cabs on there a bit.

I'm doing research to sell mine, so Ive been all over the forums. Getting s Prerunner will help, almost all 4x configurations are highly sought after.

Be wary of trucks with aftermarket mods.

There's a reason for that.

I agree Tacoma's better truck as I had both for personal use trucks. Truck to get groceries, tow small boat, put around town, etc.

Nissan they use to have the radiator and engine trans cooler connected which had a lot of issues on the 4-door frontier I had. I overpaid for mine. I had leather interior, chrome package, 4x4, and the whole works I paid $26,000 cash. The one I bought was sitting on the lot for awhile and listed well over $30k at the time. I gave it to my nephew and he still driving it. The leather interior was overkill for this truck. What I paid for it I came out happy.

Tacoma I actually bought 4 months old with 5,000 miles. Nicer truck and alittle better built. Mine was 4x4 and the only issue I had was the clutch went out on the tranny when pulling stumps out of the ground on the farm. I actually sold it to a young man in college for close to what I paid used for it. They actually made me an offer and it was a good one.

For young kid in college both will be fine. I would even look at 4x2 over a 4x4 unless they really use it.

No sense in getting the 4 since it so much weaker. Gas mileage is only about a mile or two better.

There is a reason, but for a kid until they are ready for a newer ride, either will do.

The 4 is usually a few grand cheaper than the 6. Way weaker though. Access can is fine. I've had smaller people in the back for short trips. The big guys complain though.

Get her a used Civic or Corolla.

"civic or corolla"

Im not against small cars, her normal routes will be Bluff Rd, Hwy 73 and Airline.

Im thinking a slightly larger vehicle will be safer, a few more pounds, and better visibility.

Agree?
(Not sure where you are, but BR is less than ideal for a young driver)

No. Those cars are built like a roll cage for the passengers, unitized body structure designed to absorb crash energy and prevent intrusion into the passenger compartment.

4 cylinder was my first truck. Not strong on power but I assume she won't be pulling anything and won't really need anything bigger than a 4. Cheaper and great on gas. Only problem is it takes a while for the truck to speed up if you're merging onto the interstate or something. It's a great first vehicle in my opinion

Solid trucks. You will pay for it used but its worth it becuase it will last. My brother and i both had tacomas for our first trucks
i had a 2002 4 door, prerunner 4cyl for my first truck. bought it with 15k miles and drove it HARD to 180k. I had a 3" lift and 33s through college and pulled a 18' alum boat, mud ridding and everything else a 16-22yr old kid does. Only issue i had was a head gasket blew around 130k miles.

Traded that in 2012 for a 2012 4 door 4x4 v6. Great truck for the 55k miles i had it. The only reason i sold it was to move into a full size truck for the cab space and towing power for my boat (i was moving to a much bigger boat than what is pictured)

I suggest getting a manual for any kids first vehicle. Just so they will always have that skill.
