School me on the H&R handi rifle

Paw paw and I were discussing primitive weapon season bs. He pulled out an old handi rifle and asked if he could swap barrels to a 35 whelen. Its got a .243 barrel on it at the moment. How difficult is it to swap barrels on those bad boys?

Hardest part is buying the barrel. I believe they stopped production of the Handi Rifle and barrels did't they?

I believe so. Also can be some headspace issues swapping out.

I took the forend off mine the other day to float the barrel, and it basically just hooks over a hinge. Changing it to a 35 would take all of 1min and a phillips head, but the issues it may cause I can't speculate on. The other thing is you probably will spend the same money on a whole new gun. Not hard to find these things for 200 bucks used or 250 on sale new. Yes they quit making them, but there are a good number around. Unless he has had work done on the firing mechanism (lots of people lighten the trigger and polish a few other parts) then it's really not worth it to just buy a barrel.
These guns have developed a cult following because they have a ton of issues when shipped from the factory (nothing huge, just $200 mass produced rifle). Once someone spends a few hours researching an fixing these little issues, they are some of the most accurate rifles you'll ever find. People get attached to them after tinkering with it and then watching it put rounds inside each other at the range, I know I did.

Have handi rifle in 223, 20ga, and 20ga rifles slug. Had the 45-70 but sold that one.

I bought one with the 35 Remington / 444 Marlin combo. It's easy to change out. I had heard they stopped production though.

I have a NEF 20ga that I got for my 10th birthday that has killed a few hundred squirrels. Taught me to make em count.

I have the 44 mag and also have a 12 gauge barrel for it. Changing barrels takes a minute: it is only one Phillips screw.
Go to Graybeard.com to see their forum. It covers issues related to fitting additional barrels. They also have a classified section.
Since the law relaxed in MS, you may be able to find a used 35 for just a little more than a barrel.

As cheap as they are I would probably just get another one.

Thanks everyone for the info. Just talked to him and he found one on a website, new in box, never shot, etc. He doesn't use that old .243 anymore so he figured he'd go ahead and just get a barrel.

Any links for these mods?

Remington, along with its Marlin and H&R subsidiaries, are now part of the Freedom Group. H&R 1871 production ceased 27 February 2015.
Marlin is also now owned by Freedom Group.
From the H&R1871 website FAQ's:
Can I put rifle barrels on a shotgun receiver?
No. Rifle receivers can be fitted with either rifle or shotgun barrels. Shotgun barrels can be fitted only with other shotgun barrels.
On what receivers can I use higher caliber barrels?
The receiver would need to be originally chambered in a centerfire caliber (SB2) and must be 1999 or newer.

The link below is more than you will ever want to know about these guns. I wouldn't call what I did mods, just TLC to stuff that doesn't get double checked at the factory to keep costs dirt cheap.
99.99% of these guns ship with loose scope rails that have machining debris, locktite and 10 mins and it is rock solid. Similarly, if the forend screw is over torqued it can put slight but uneven pressure on the barrel, causing bad groups. Simply add a small rubber washer or spacer under the screw to "float" the barrel. Some guns need a light polishing of the barrel, mine didn't seem to. Lots of links there on how to lighten up the trigger pull but I haven't attempted that one yet. Also like any rifle, they are picky about ammo. Hornady SP 200gr works great in my 35wh, but others swear they only like Rem corelokt. Little crap like that and my gun became a tack driver.

I learned this the hard way opening day of the season. I missed 3 deer. Then shot at one in the shoulder and hit him in the neck.

Ditto. I shot at a doe 35 yards broad side and whiffed. After some soul searching on my abilities as a shooter I decided it couldn't be all on me and found the link above.
