I think it's a gray rat snake. Can anyone confirm?

I think grey but never was 100% sure how to tell the difference between grey and Texas. If they look more grey than brown I say grey.

It's a midland rat snake, aka gray rat snake. Pantherophis spiloides.

Teague, I have often wondered weather your raptors ever catch snakes when hunting?

They haven't yet, but probably just because we're usually hunting in cool weather. It's just a matter of time though. I actually fed my red tail a dead snake last week. It was one that my indigo snake refused to eat. So, rather than wasting it, I tossed it to the bird.

Thought so. How do you tell between the grey and Texas...Texas is more brown in coloration?

Yep...birds are their number one food source.

Mostly just by where you find them. They do differ in color some, but we do have some here in AL that have more tan, or black, than gray.

Gotcha. I found 2 in my yard that seemed more grey to me in Louisiana. So I always thought grey

I'm no scientist, but to be honest, I think they're all the same snake. The divisions seem very arbitrary to me, and there's no real line of delineation, at least, not east of the Mississippi. It's just a gradual change from eastern, to midland, to, probably, western, which is the way they have them officially broken up now. There seem to be as many intergrades as there are true species/subspecies.
