So, I have a S&W .38 SPL I want to get rid of. In doing research I find reference to pinned barrel, no dash, square/round butt, chiefs special...and all sorts of variants of that, with wildly ranging prices. So, can y'all help me at least get the lingo correct so I can search for comps?

First off, it's got an Uncle Mikes no logo grip on it.

It's a MOD. 36

I've seen MOD stacked ontop of the 36, but none with a dash, is this a no-dash model 36?
I would assume the top number is just a build number, the shitty A15 or whatever that is I have no idea.

And then to date it the bottom of the frame has the J serial number, which appears to be very late in production...I can't find when these went out of production...somewhere 1983ish?

Again, the 32595 being some build number, WTF is the F13 that looks hand stamped in there?

Is that a 'round butt'? I've seen some where the back of the grip flares out more?

I did some research on there, figured out its not a pinned barrel...it's got a crush fit one. Also it is a round butt model and not square. No dash apparently doesn't imply an early example, it means there's been no modification or to the model. So this is a no dash model 36.

Thanks. If I sold it on gunbroker can I just ship it to an FFL from the post office? That the best way to move it? La Sportsman may be easier if I could just drive to meet someone. Are there any other legit options?

You need to check into laws in other states that you might ship it to. Most states require an FFL to FFL transfer which means you can drop your gun off at an FFL of your choice and they will take care of the shipping. Should cost around $25. Some states will allow you to ship with UPS or Fedex but you have to send a photocopy of your drivers license with it.

Nope. Licensed gun dealers can ship via USPS, but you & I can't.

If you sell to an out-of-state buyer, you'll be shipping the gun to a licensed (FFL) dealer in his area. You'll probably have to ship it via FedEx - and they may make you ship it "overnight." (UPS has gotten really restrictive on shipping firearms - your local UPS store may not accept it).

The FFL who receives the gun will run a background check on the buyer (the buyer pays the fee for this) -- this protects you from selling it to a felon, or anyone else who is prohibited from buying a firearm.

You need to contact the local dealer and get a copy of his FFL before you ship the gun -- this is to make sure the place you're sending it to is really a licensed dealer.

I bought a gun through gunbroker and used a local FFL, but I bought it from a gun store so I assume they were an FFL. I thought about getting a trigger job done on it, but the overnight FedEx shipping was $100 (on top of the $365 for the reduced reset job). The shipping ruined it for me.

Hell, I may be better off a pawn shop with the shipping, PayPal fees, and I assume gunbroker charges a sellers fee.
