Yesterday I got tired of ladyfish chomping my plastic cocahoes in half on Elmer's so I switched to hard jerk baits. Obviously they didn't do much damage to those but frickin treble hooks man. Especially in a kayak fighting the current. Any options other than tons of patience and a good set of pliers?

No pliers on a yak AND using treble hooks?

I've never been in a mess of ladyfish where I couldn't use soft plastics. I've also not had much luck with hard plastics on trout. I've tried jerk baits, ratltraps, diving, etc

I had a set of pliers but it was still a pain in the arse. It was either treble hooks or a new plastic every 5 casts. They were thick. Might have just been that day. It's the worst I've experienced.

I've never caught trout when the ladyfish are that thick. I would have mover or opened a beer and tried again later.

Anybody catching on the island this weekend?

Wut? That's sounds crazy to me.

On the beaches during the summer I throw almost exclusively hard body baits with treble hooks.

Suspending and slow sinking Mirrolures, shallow running crank baits, jerk baits and the like.

Don't use rattle traps much. Sometimes I will throw gold ones around the jetties which the Reds will annihilate.

I always mash down the barbs on hooks, especially trebles.

Also, these are great LINK for fishing in general & especially on kayaks.

Cut the trebles off. Install single shank siwash hooks. Have fun fighting the baby tarpon.

Are you sure it wasn't bluefish damaging your baits? That's the only saltwater pest fish I've encountered that had a penchant for ruining plastics.....you don't even need to catch them...I went through about 5 baits before catching one and figuring out what in the hell was going on.

It's possible but I did actually catch a few of the ladyfish so I assumed that's what I was catching. Who knows. I'm looking online right now about replacing with single hooks

let the ladyfish play out. i usually use light line and lighter drag. by the time the damn things get back to me, they're gassed. leave them in the water and twist the hooks out with your pliers without touching them.

When you get the ladyfish on the beach there's usually bluefish and spanish along with them, one of those are the likely culprit. Back to question, no they are a pita, rubber net and pliers is the quickest and safest solution. I wouldn't want a lady fish flopping around between my legs attached to a Bomber Long A.

Please do. I found that article on another forum I'm on and have saved it to my favorites bar.

You have a pair of split ring pliers?
