Well damn the luck.

Any advice on fishing for snapper in the bay? I've pretty much just hit Destin, but that drive sucks from Pensacola. I've seen the website selling #s in the bay, is that worth a crap?

I may or may not have been fishing numbers from that chart. If you're willing to pay it, it's worth it.

Might have to go ahead and bite the bullet on it. What do you catch in the pass and the bays? I'm guessing Mackerel and Red Snapper? I've heard that they catch some grouper in the bay too. Anything else of note? Do you have better luck close to the pass or just in the middle of the bay?

I fish the gulf shores pier quite a bit. The best advice is to read the gulfshorespierfishing.com forum. You can search and find answers to just about every question. It's better to get advice for a specific pier because things can change a lot from pier to pier. For instance, right now I highly recommend buying a red ribbon rig for catching scaled sardines (incorrectly called LY the local yokels) as they are much more effective than sabikis this month. Sabikis are slower and you end up catching large hardtails. Less time catching bait, more time with a king mackerel bait in the water.

Not saying that you will never catch red snapper in the bays but it and grouper would be extremely rare.

The snapper that you likely hear about being caught in bays will be mangrove. Very fun, but frustrating as it's hard to catch them in the bay and them be legal length.
I'm mostly talking about Mobile Bay, FYI.

I'm pretty sure Pensacola has a pretty fair population of Red Snapper. I've caught a couple on the bridge before, nothing big though...

Not that this is the gospel, just the first link that came up. Pensacola Snapper and Grouper

That link is saying that the water in Pensacola is 60+ft. That should be plenty deep enough if there is good structure for them.

Never fished out of Pensacola though.
