Hey guys, I moved d Orange Beach for the summer to work until I go back to school in August. I went saltwater fishing last night for the first time and loved it.

I'm going to buy a setup this afternoon but I am completely clueless on what to get. Will be fishing from the Gulf Shores peer fishing for king, cobia, reds, tarpon etc.. From talking to my buddy and a few of the guys on the peer, Most of them had a cobia pole, king pole etc..

My question is for all the saltwater enthusiast: What king of rod/reel should I get? What size leader? What test of line?

Looking to spend no more then $300, if possible.

I am planning on using bait fish caught at the pier.

Like I said, I'm completely clueless so any extra tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

I'm not the most experienced salt water fisher, but how in the hell do you catch tarpon from a pier?

Stradic 6000 on the reel. Spend the rest on an 8' Rod

30-50 pound braided line. I like steel leaders when I'm targeting toothy fish like kings. Flourocarbon should be sufficient for everything else.

Good luck with the Cobia. Keep your eyes peeled. Pier etiquette is typically the guy that spots the ling calls it out and gets the first crack at it.

2 setups for 300 is doable but remember you get what you pay for.

Spanish is going to be the main catch off the pier with lady fish, hard tails and bluefish mixed in. The Kings and cobia will get in that close every once in a while but for the most part if you're fishing with baitfish then you'll catch what I listed above. Sometimes artificial can be better than live bait for kings and Spanish. The faster, louder, and shinier the better. Certain fish will be running at different times of year, and the setup I recommended is overkill when the pompano are running. It's a good medium sized reel though. Not light tackle and not offshore tackle, though it's capable of catching larger fish.

Tarpon hang around the piers like mullets in some places.

I understand that, but keeping him out of the pilings and then hoisting it up the pier is another story.

depending on the pier, a lot of places you can walk it to the beach if the fish is too big to pull up.

You will really need at least two rods.

You will need a longer one for kings. The length to get your cast far enough away from the pier. On this one you will need a high capacity reel to hold enough line for the initial run.

You will need a smaller rod for smaller fish around the pier and also for catching your bait.

I'd look at a 7ft spinning rod with a 2000 reel for the smaller and an 8ft and a 6000 for the bigger.

I'm a huge fan of shimano. Look at the sahara for a good reel that doesn't cost a fortune.

The pilings are the real issue. I have fished on that pier a little for many years and have seen so many get fish close to the pier only for them to make one loop and...he gone.

Lot of sharks hanging around the Gulf State Park pier. It's not uncommon for the sharks to get your catch if you reel too slow. I saw four 5-6' sharks within about 10-15 minutes at the end of the pier 2 weeks ago.

For the heavier reel id look at Daiwa Saltist.5000. Holds 440 yards of 55lb braid. 5 super bearing reel. Just more reel for the buck, they aint cheap,,$199- you can get a good 8 foot spinning rod for that weight for $100- 129.

I think you are going to be in $500- $600 and well worth it. Might have to get a pier net I've seem them use. Plus a cart to carry the whole rIG and your Yeti with the brew don't forget about that, plus baits ect...

Check craigslist and local forums, might be able to pick up a good deal from people getting out of it or people who are moving away.

I was there a few weeks ago. An old man told me that, if a shark is targeting your catch, to stop reeling and let that King "do what he do." Something to the like of he wouldn't be that size if he couldn't outrun those sharks.

No matter how fast you reel, good luck out-reeling a shark.

Join the Gulf Shores Pier Fishing Forum. Not a real busy board but some of the pier regulars do post there.

Free spool it and let that king do his thing. They're called smokers for a reason.

Reels, I would take a serious look at the Penn Battles. One of the best bang for your buck reels on the market IMO. As far as rods, I've never done much pier fishing, mainly from the kayak.

Heading to P'cola the weekend of the 11th and probably a few more weekends before the summer is up, thinking about bringing my yak. If you're up for making a trip shoot me an email DownSouthDave84 at gmail.

Since you will be there, do yourself a favor and go to the end of Fort Morgan Rd and fish behind the fort.

Reds, specks and a little bit of everything else.

Stop by Top Gun Tackle or Mo's and surely they can point you in the right direction with gear, locations, etc.
