My mom brought me my old 20 gauge shotgun I used to hunt with as a kid. I hadn't touched the gun in probably 20 years and it's just been sitting. There's quite a bit of rust on it and I need to clean it up. Any suggestions on what to use?

Brass brush and oil, something like CLP. Start there to determine if it is surface rust or pitted...

Very low grit steel wool and gun oil works also.

Larry, wouldn't that take the blueing off the gun?

Try electrolysis. Let me know if you need further details. It's really a lot easier than it sounds.

I inherited a '61 Sears and Roebuck 12ga. from a family member 3 years ago. it had a good bit of surface rust, no pitting luckily. I used this kit to fix it up.

by no means was it a professional quality job but it works for me

Think the rust already took care of the bluing.

OP, 0000 steel wool and light oil will take care of the surface rust. If it's bad it might need media blasting and refinishing.

Any of you ever used those cold blueing products like oxphoblue? I have a few old guns that are in rough shape as well. None of them carry much monetary value or sentimental so refinishing would only add to them IMO.

I have a bottle of re-blue which I put on my old 1100 my grandfather left me. It had a huge scratch and the blueing was worn off. This stuff seemed to get rid of it with a few applications with a q-tip.

Order a Big 45 Frontier metal cleaner pad and use with some Breakfree CLP. Let the CLP soak on the rust for a day or so before starting.

You will get suggestions about steel and brass wool. Both will work to some extent, but Big 45 is the best for light rust.

For heavy rust, crush the mouth of a brass rifle or handgun ammo case and use it as a scraper in conjunction with CLP.

NOTE: Loose rust particles floating around in the oil can scratch bluing.

Yes.

I am too lazy to type out the process. There is a vid on youtube where a guy reblues a Nylon 66 receiver cover. Start there and watch a few others.

Best are Cape Cod cloths for light rust. Excellent for any metal polishing too.
