Anyone use a Ruger American? Looking to get a cheap 30 06. I currently hunt with a Browning 300, but I want something shorter to hunt out of a climber/lock on this season.

I got one last year in the wally world sale. Have about 30 rounds through it at shooting range in the last year. What do you want to know?

I have a Ruger American Predator in .308.

For the money it's a very good gun. If you want shorter look at this one. 18" barrel, free float barrel, threaded barrel, adjustable trigger.

Very accurate.

Just wanting a review of performance. I have shot Remingtons all my life before the Browning. Just want to get the best bang for my buck (no pun intended).

I'm still working up loads on mine but when done I'm expecting to get around 1" or less on a 5 shot group at 100yds on mine.

ETA: even thought the barrel at 18" seems really short (and it is) the gun handles wonderfully. My 11 year old has shot it a couple of times. The recoil pad works very well.

I do plan on getting the magpul stock for it at some point in the future.

Very accurate, for the price I paid for one I have no complaints.

Another vote for the Predator in .308. If you are looking for something affordable, accurate, and short, that thing fits the bill perfectly. I have one and love it. Straps into my day pack easily and is great to carry.

I got my 8 year old daughter the American .308 this past year. She shoots 150 grain winchesters in it. She killed 7 hogs and a doe. She loves it, not one animal took a step. Its the compact model and was under $400. Its not as smooth of a bolt as my Ruger M77 but for the price its a great little gun.

I bought it in 7mm08 youth for my seven year old. I take it with or without him. I love it for the money. Put a decent Leupold on it and it's a good gun

I put mine in a Boyd's stock, stuck a Nikon ProStaff scope on it, and put 10 shots into a ragged Quarter-sized hole with handload 168gr SMK's at 100 yards.

For the price it is good, trigger sucks though. I am still trying to find what bullet it like best.

I have the Compact All Weather model in 7mm-08 that I bought for my kids. They are shooting 120gr Hornady Custom Lite Low Recoil ammo.

I have also been using the rifle on the few occasions that I am not bow hunting and I am shooting 140gr Remington Core Lokt.

We have killed 4 deer with it so far and all have not gone very far. Overall we really like the rifle and the caliber.

I've got the same one NIB in my safe waiting for 4lsu2jr. He's 4 this season, so it will sit another year or two. I can't wait to see him kill his first deer with that gun.

Looking forward to the sale again this year. Got my stores mapped out and ready to roll. Works out that I even have almost 2 weeks off just about the time the sale should start
