Savage Axis isn't 100% junk, but enough parts are junk for me to say skip it. 308 is a good choice. The Ruger American line is fine, but as it has already been mentioned, the stocks feel cheap. You can jump up in class at Savage for not much money and get a good rifle.

You came to the right fricking place

My daughter has the Axis in 7mm-08. It stacks nickle-sized groups at 100yds with a cheap arse weaver scope.

A friend has the Ruger in .308 for his son. He doesn't have any complaints and it has killed a bunch of deer.

If you are buying it to shoot deer, either one is fine. Another poster asked why you are getting in .308 vs 30-06 or .270. They all do the same damn thing out to 300 yds.

Good. How about you start your own thread about brownings in 7mm and gtfo of this one. The guy specifically asked about 2 rifles in one cartridge, none which were 7mm or browning. Do you drop into threads about "Going trout fishing in Lake Pontchartrain" to offer your opinion on "I love catching perch in Lake Ontario"? No, you don't. So you and everyone else with shitty posting histories similar to yours should consider keeping your opinions to themselves if they aren't relevant. I swear this board used to be good for exchanging information but now it's turned into babysitting a bunch of crackhead children.

did same research and it was a coin flip i bought the ruger in 6.5 creedmore and love it it leaves a 2 inch exit hole but doesnt knock down deer on the spot the ones i lung shot ran 20 - 30 yards very light, minimum kick and easy to shoulder ( 3006 usually drops them on the spot but it kicks and is heavy to carry)

I have the Ruger American, but if I was deciding between the two, I would probably lean towards the Savage just for the adjustable trigger. That said, I think the trigger on my Ruger is just fine, it's right at 4 lbs

You reload correct? You don't need me telling you that 270 & 3006 have better ballistics. Will the 308 kill deer in the south, you bet your arse and it will do it fine. But it is a poor mans 3006,270. Price for all 3 are the same, recoil difference between the three is negligible so why get the least versatile of the three?

See the trigger is the only thing I didn't like, it is serviceable but not great. The stock didn't bother me.

Also the OP never said anything about deer hunting in the south or long range shooting.

I believe the trigger on the RAR is adjustable, I never felt the need to mess with the adjustment on mine though.

Of those 2 I would pick the American. Although it is almost a toss up for me.

But, pay a little more and get a tikka. Sorry, I had to add that.

My kid has a savage axis II. great gun. Never have shot the ruger American but I imagine it’s similar to other budget rifles. I have tc compass in 300wm. I’ve killed mule deer in Montana with it. While not as smooth as a higher end rifle, it’s no slouch. Just something to consider.

Pick the one that feels the best to you. In regard to performance they're damn near the same. Both solid.

My kids have the axis in 7mm-08 and a kid that hunts with us has the ruger in .308. They do the same thing.

My Axis II is a 6.5 and it is a nice little rifle. It is light, accurate and I like the trigger. I still prefer my older Model 70 best, but the Savage is a damn good gun.
