Refinishing my front door

Only 3 years old, but the sun is beating the hell outta my front door. This was much darker to start with and much more gloss. I thought I'd get at least 5+ years out of it.
Questions...
Do I need to completely sand it down before adding more stain to it? Or can I pressure wash it and stain over what's there?
Once stained the right color, whats the best protection to keep this from being a every other year thing?
For reference...

Dude I've got same thing going on. You have to sand it down to bare wood to go back with same color that's a huge pita project. I've sanded mine as much as able and gone back a little darker three times in three years. Nothing protects from that morning sun. My next move is Painting it. Good luck

You can stain over what's there, but it won't be the same color. There isn't a very effective way to keep it super protected except maybe re-applying a protective finish every so often.

Yeah I think I'm good with it being a bit darker as long as I don't have to take it back to bare wood.
The wife was trying to talk me into a $6k metal door and I wouldn't bite.
I'm hearing it now lol.

Best move I made with the door on my house was having this guy out of Denham Springs, Rice Sutton, finish the door for me. Door still looks great 5 years later. I found him from a friend suggesting him. You really should check out his website and talk to him. I was very impressed with his work.

Could you paint it?
General finishes Milk paint won't fade. Comes in a bunch of colors.
No it isn't stain.

he is a very good painter.
stained front doors look really nice but are a major PITA. I quit staining front doors on the houses I build several years ago after I realized all the headaches I was causing for my buyers (its a non-warranty item).
our climate is not conducive for this and Lord help you if the door faces west.

That's what Rice Sutton does. He paints it and makes it look like stain.

I stained mine then applied a marine varnish. It has been 3 years and still looks great.

Yeah painting is definitely an option of there's no other way to make it last. The wife would probably hate that idea, but she's not the one having to refinish a 3 yr old door lol.
I was reading about marine varnish, seems like that Should hold up to the elements better than most other stuff. Where would one find that?

We had this happening, went to a paint store and they had a stain that they called marine grade. I stained my door with it about 5 years ago, and it still looks great today.

Everyone who has seen my door doesn't even know that it's paint and all think that it stained. You really should check into it.

I have almost exact same doors as OP. Every year would have to sand and stain/treat.
I had enough, found a guy out of central who does "faux" stain but it's actually painted. Two years strong and still looks the same the day the guy did it.
Edit, just saw previous post. Rice dutton did mine also.

What kind of price does he charge for painting? I just did my post and about to start door and really don't want to do it!

Automotive clear coat. It will last 10+ years.

Man I'm just guessing, I have a terrible memory. I want to say 3-4 hundred. Obviously a lot more than doing myself, however not having to prep and stain yearly is totally worth it!

Depends if you want him to do just the exterior of the door or the interior as well.
I believe it was around 400 for one side and around 700 for both sides when he did mine in 2010.

Same boat man. The bottom of my door and my shutters look like shite and they are just a few years old.
I am REALLY interested in the style work that Rice Sutton is doing with the faux stain paint.
I am going to try to talk to the guys at Caddo Paint next week on the subject. Ill let you know what I find out
