CZ 75 or Beretta 92.

CZ's bring you the control layout of a 1911, but with a DA/SA ability and 15+ rounds in the mag. Very well made and easy to shoot accurately.

Beretta gives you a very smooth, accurate shooter, 15+ rounds in the mag, and the added draw of being what our military carries.

If you feel part of the fun of owning a pistol is being able to shoot it all day at the range without getting sore, and you want something that will last and your kids may one day want it, either of these are winners.

Sigs are fine pistols, but lack the safety. If you're feeling adventurous, you might consider the Arex Rex Zero, it's pretty similar to a Sig with a safety attached.

Glock 19, since you already dropped the thumb safety might as well drop the no glock thing.

I never see anyone talk about them but by far the best shooting 9mm I own is the Tanfolio witness. I love it and everytime someone at the range shoots it they go buy one. Also very affordable.

I listed the CZ 75 and the Beretta 92; for clarification you should include the clones and derivatives with that.

CZ- this would be actual CZ, the Tanfoglio guns, the Mossad guns, and the recent Canik/TriStar guns. Very good ergonomics and proven design. The Turkish guns were really good bargains.

Beretta- actual Berettas, the Taurus 92 (I know Taurus gets ragged a lot, but the 92 series was built on old Beretta machinery and seems to get solid reviews), and again, the Turkish clones- ATI used to market some, and I think it's now Chiappa that sells a Turkish 92 clone.

If you go with what you'd call Sig style, I think you would include Sigs at the top, the Arex below that mostly because it is new and not taken a good foothold yet, and then the Zastava CZ99/999/EZ series.

I've got a CZ 75, a Beretta 92SF, and a CZ99. All are as accurate as you want to be, you can shoot them all day comfortably, and are all tough as heck.

If you don't plan on carrying the gun, there is no reason to not get a full sized one.

That being said, if you insist on having a manual thumb safety, I would vote FN FNP/FNX or HK P30/USP.

This is the exact reason I have my Beretta 92FS. Had it for years, no complaints.

I think the slide mounted safety is a bad example of a good safety.

Get you a Beretta PX4 Storm baw. Extremely well priced and smooth shooting.

I love my PX4 storm. It's one of the smoothest shooting guns I won. It will eat any ammo you put in it. It's just a great gun.

I prefer the frame safety, but there are plenty of good pistols with slide-mounted safeties. Beretta 92 series, S&W 39/59 series, Walther PP, Makarov, etc.

3rd Gen S&W's are great guns for the price they are running. Get a 5906, stainless frame and slide, built like tanks, a lot of parts available. That's a ton of gun value at around $300-$400 (I saw one recently posted for sale in BR for $350).
I have a 915, another great little pistol for the price, aluminum frame, ran me under $300 total.
They didn't stop making them because they were bad guns, they stopped because the police market wanted polymer frames and they could make a better profit on the M&P series.
They have the Beretta style safety, but better tactile feedback when you click it around.

If you like the Beretta style but prefer frame safety, then check into the Taurus 92 series. From what I gather, this was Beretta machinery and factory (like the US made Berettas made in Maryland), and Brazil let the contract expire and Taurus bought it out.
I've not seen many complaints regarding this particular model, unlike many other of their pistols.

If you are willing to spend $1K, Browning Hi-power is the 9mm classic - all blued steel, hammer fired, single action, safety. Heirloom pistol.

Don't need to spend nearly that much. I have a FEG clone that was parkerized, cost me $200 and change. You can find true Browning or Fabrique Nationale marked pistols used, for $400.
The finish is rough, but since it's an all-steel gun, you can get it refinished as you like. I've seen some that are absolutely stunning.

BTW, since the CZ 75 is also steel, you can refinish these too.

Over on one of the CZ websites, someone turned this

Not necessarily a CC, but I would like to be able to. I don't think I have a need for a full frame gun

I agree with Ricardo in that if you want a little bit of versatility, a mid sized gun or a compact gun will suit you just fine. And when I say "mid sized" or "compact" I also mean double stack. In my mind a single stack is its own breed.

The one thing you will lack besides shootability as Ricardo mentioned:

Capacity

I've heard the tried and true responses of "I have no need for 17 rounds because it's not like I'll be at the OK Coral." But if you ask anyone who has had to use his or her gun in self defense, I highly doubt you would hear, "you know, I really wish I had fewer rounds in that situation."

This is the same reason I choose 9mm over 45 for my defensive guns. Besides having a reliable handgun that shoots well, capacity is one of my top priorities in a defensive handgun. If I don't have to conceal the thing comfortably I will take a full sized handgun 100% of the time. And if I have a long gun available the pistol will become the backup to my primary.
