Acquired a new 870 express (gift). Already have an SBE2 for a bird gun, was planning on using this for home defense. Anyone have recommendations for an aftermarket 18" barrel? Or just use a Remington one?

I bought the mossberg brand. It fit just fine and was a good bit cheaper than the Remington one. But it was blued, so if yours isn't blued I don't know if mossberg make one to match.

Cut with hacksaw. File smooth. Just don't cut too short.

Make sure it's not one of those "European Style" high shooting 870's.

I don't believe it's "European style"

I took it to the skeet range after I got it and had it had a hard time ejecting fired shells. Seems like that has been an issue with newer 870s because there are tiny machine marks in that part of the barrel, and after a round is fired, it expands just enough to get in a bind and won't want to eject. It'll cycle an unforced shell no problem.

Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem and if staying away from a Remington branded barrel was the better option.

I plan on doing that for the 28" barrel that came with it, just need to find a shorter one for home defense, lot of options out there.

Keep the 28 and buyt the 18.5

I did this and and will put the 28" on if I go hunting with it. However I shot a few squiirels with my 18.5 barrel.

I had that problem consistently right out of the box and even after a month of solid range time. Replaced the extractor with this and the extractor spring with mil-spec grade steel spring (much stronger/stiffer)...Solved the spent shell extraction problem and did not polish the chamber either, although it could use it.

Just pick up a 18.5 Remington barrel, you will be happier in the long run and have a very versatile shotgun.

I recently bought a Carlsons 18.5 for my 870, but I haven't shot it yet.
It has screw in choke tubes though, which is cool. Came with a cylinder choke.

This is what I ended up going with from Midway. Carlson barrel with Remchokes, so i can use my existing ones.
