Was fishing 32 miles offshore out of Grand Isle over an old rig and caught what appeared to be an African Pompano. This was determined after an exhaustive internet search. Is this fish rare for these waters? My friend and I have fished the gulf many years and never have caught anything like it.

I caught one on a charter boat out of Orange Beach while amberjack fishing several years ago. They aren't common, but the captain was like: "Look at that...African Pompano." Said they caught one every year or two.

Said one year after a big hurricane a bunch of them got blown in and they were fairly common for about a year or two, then they went away again.

Easy now.

"New" is a subjective term.

JAB is new, but because of his post count we don't consider him new.

Post more and you won't be new.

Edit: Foot in the pic....you know what you're doing.
