How far from the beach is raccoon island? Do you think it is safe to go there in a 19ft bayboat? Thanks

Look at google map to understand Louisiana coast. There isn't a defining east /west beach in Louisiana as in other states. From protected marsh to raccoon island is only a few miles but 100' of open water is more than a 30' boat can handle in bad seas. Watch the weather for 10 knots or less and ask to buddy boat first few times. But by all means have a chart plotter and know how to use before going. Storms , running aground , lost in the marsh can get serious quickly. Beautiful area to fish and explore but it takes years to get the benefit of this vast area but very worth it.

Assuming you're talking about Coon Point out of Dularge. Absolutely on a calm day, just go wide around the end of the island.

I've done it in a 17' prodrive. You'll be fine if you don't go on a rough day.

Thanks to all who have answered. I guess a gentle north wind with a reasonable tide would be the best time. I have a GPS, and I am extremely cautious on the water which is why I have asked for some help.

Get ready to deal with the hippies that camp out there. Oh, and watch out for pelican shite.

I have slept on the floor of that little hut on Timbalier before along with the cold concrete of several of the platforms in the bay out there.
