Secondly, i dont know jack shite about guns. Never owned one, shot one or like to even be near them. I'm a fisherman, not a hunter ... obviously.
Look up 3 gun competitions, NRA high-power rifle, IPSC and IDPA. No offense to be given or taken but hunting isn't the only sport. There are several million competitive shooters in the US. Whereas hunting has had a drop in 47 states, sport shooters are growing and will continue to grow unless Hillary or some other demand gets into office. YouTube has tons of videos and you'll get better acquainted with shooting sports.

All, i really appreciate the feedback.
To whomever mentioned confirmation bias.... well not so much. I fully support ones right to own these guns. Again, just not being a gun person, i was more curious as to the practicality.
I totally get the vanity/collectible side, its uses in hunting, competitive shooting, etc.
Appreciate the feedback, felt i got a little wiser with this thread.

I said slight confirmation bias, meaning you had a few preconceived notions but were open-minded for the most part.

Wish more people did what you did and asked those that own them what the deal is.

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but in reality an "assault rifle" has select-fire (fully automatic) capability.
Legally, any weapon with select-fire capability is referred to as a "machinegun" by the ATF.
You cannot walk into a gun store and pick up a machinegun. You must apply for a NFA tax stamp through the ATF to purchase a transferable machinegun.
Semi-automatic ARs are NOT assault rifles.
"Assault weapon" is a political term devised during the Brady Campaign/Bill, and is rather arbitrary.

bapple, when is your next concealed carry class? I would like some information for my brother and me. Thanks

What would be the purpose of owning this gun besides protection from home invasion? Seems extreme ... why not just a handgun? Shouldn't that be enough?
It might be enough. A bat or a fist might be enough.
Might not be. People should be able to own the most effective tool available.
The last couple of weeks should have shown you the effectiveness of these weapons.

My question is on what the media calls "assault rifles"...
This is made up shite that is plastered out there by the mainstream media. AR does NOT stand for assault rifle. AR stands for ArmaLite rifle. ArmaLite is the developer of the first platform.

Yeah, i actually knew that much. That's why i worded it the way I did.
From my understanding, a true assault rifle is fully automatic.

At a minimum, it has some select fire capability, either full auto, burst (some models allow 2-, 3-, 4-, or 5-round bursts with each pull of the trigger, for example - that seems more common in certain H&K models, as well as H&K submachine guns, though) or some combination, in addition to single (semi) mode.

GTG,
As has been mentioned, the AR can be a good (even exceptional in the right situation) hunting rifle. For example, I like to go on prairie dog hunts. One guide I use does not allow use of the AR on his prairie dog hunts because it can be so effective on a pd hunt. I didn't really understand this until I used a friends AR to shoot a few pd's on a hunt last year. Previously, I'd always hunted w/ various single shot handguns and bolt action rifles. In the pd fields, the AR has a number of advantages over other guns: reduced recoil allows the shooter to see where the bullet impacted; fast reload allows the shooter to get back on target really quickly, even before your spotter has time to tell you where you hit (or before the pd realizes what's happened). In any hunting situation or competition w/ multiple targets, the AR can be VERY effective.

Bapple puts on an amazing class folks.
I was in your class on Saturday....assuming there aren't any other BAPPLE's on here that do CCP classes.
TF here.
Thanks again for that :).....Already got my app filled out just trying to figure out how/if to get to BR to do the fingerprints.

Funny how I'm so easy to spot after you've met me!
If you have any other questions or any other feedback feel free to message me.
One thing I did forget to mention in the class is my YouTube channel. It's on the lesson plan I printed out and you can reference it for more information about those FAQs.
Was a pleasure teaching you guys! Feel free to contact me if you need extra info or have questions.

Save fully automatic
what is your problem with these?

What would be the purpose of owning this gun besides protection from home invasion?
Resistance to tyranny, protection from mobs/rioters (see Rodney King riots)
quote:
why not just a handgun?
long guns are MUCH more effective at stopping an assailant. Handguns are generally quite ineffective, despite what you see on TV
quote:
Is there a purpose to owning one? Can or do you hunt with this gun
See above, and yes
quote:
Would there ever be a reason to be in public with one?
A reason as in high likelihood for use? Hopefully not, but it's not impossible to fathom. Think NOLA post-katrina. I know you weren't supposed to be there, but if you were, then being armed would probably have been advisable.
