First off, i fully support the 2nd amendment no matter what type of gun. (Save fully automatic which you can't just buy anyway)

Secondly, i dont know jack shite about guns. Never owned one, shot one or like to even be near them. I'm a fisherman, not a hunter ... obviously.

My question is on what the media calls "assault rifles"...

What would be the purpose of owning this gun besides protection from home invasion? Seems extreme ... why not just a handgun? Shouldn't that be enough?

Is there a purpose to owning one? Can or do you hunt with this gun?

Would there ever be a reason to be in public with one?

Honestly not trying to flame...I have NO IDEA when it comes to guns.

I'm fine with people owning them but more curious as to why you would?

Thanks fellas.

Lots of folks use them for hog hunting, in areas that is popular.

Nothing special about them except they are semi auto. They are fun at the range, and that's really the only justification anyone needs to own one.

Yeah, i could see how they'd be more fun to shoot than a regular gun.

Almost like a hobby gun ... makes sense.

What's the purpose of buying one of these "assault rifles?" Because is your constitution right as a United States Citizen to own one. I for one have fully taken advantage of that right. I have 5 weapons in my name as 21 year old. 2 Pistols, 1 AR-15, one shotgun and one hunting rifle. That's really nothing I'm considered an outdoor board poor with those numbers.

On a serious note, you can hunt any game in Louisiana with an AR-15, I'm almost positive of that, but I could be wrong For sure large game, not sure about duck but why the heck would you try to shoot a duck with an AR anyway.

No I wouldn't walk around in public with my AR on my shoulder. For one I don't want people knowing I have a rifle and secondly I'd be they first person someone shot if they saw my arse walking around with an AR if they were planning on committing a crime. I'd be the only threat they saw, basically like hey everyone shoot me first!!!

All in all they are like Legos for big boys, they are great for hunting and defense. They are very fun to shoot in the open, I hate shooting my AR inside. You should get one its like feeling the power of God when you pull the trigger.

Just read that over, I wasn't trying to be a dick. Sorry if I came off that way!

About the only time I see them are at the range.

Friend has an AK-74. We took it out in the woods with some tannerite. Now that was pretty damn cool.

Anything with a black stock is an assault rifle as per the media. The main reason people own them (assuming you're talking ARs) is because they are fun to shoot and fun to customize. People do hunt smaller game and stuff where you can have multiple shots with them

Handguns are underpowered compared to rifle rounds. An AR is also way easier to shoot accurately and effectively.

Cool, thanks all!

I didn't know if they were used for hunting or not. Good to know.

Thanks everyone for not ripping my naive self a new one.

I knew this, but at least growing up, seemed like a handgun or shotgun was the home protection go-to.

They certainly can be. The rounds aren't much different than some game rounds people use. I've known people to use them while hunting, just haven't myself. There's nothing really specific to war about the rounds used.

The past 10 years or so AR's have really became popular among the average gun owner. So many companies making parts these days and the price for them has came down considerably. Buying a decent AR now is cheaper than your average semi auto shotgun

Second amendment applies to anything the military has. That includes tanks, planes, fully autos, anything you can think of imo.

My mom is only able to handle the recoil of my AR15 which is what she uses because it is easy to maneuver, holds lots of cartridges, is ergonomic and has very good ballistics at close range in terms of lethality and not overpenatrating. I use an AK loaded with 123 grain Hornady SST rounds because it is an effective rifle and easy to shoot. I use both guns for hunting as well.
So yeah, mine are for home defense because they are the best guns that I have for that job.

First and foremost my reason for owning one is that its my constitutional right and weather or not you feel I "need" one makes absolutely no difference to me at all, that decision isn't up to you.

But, in an attempt to reply to your question in a manor you were wanting.
1) The AR-15 is not an "assault rifle" that is a term the media has manufactured to get "clicks"
2) The AR-15 is probably the most versatile weapon on the planet. Every thing from hunting, Home Defense, Recreational target shooting, and competitive target shooting can all be accomplished via modifications to the same gun.
3) Yes, pistols are wonderful from home defense but anyone with any sort of training will tell you that pistols should ultimately only be used to fight to get to your long gun. A rifle like the AR-15 is infinitely more accurate, more powerful, and better suited at eliminating any threat be it in your home and to your family or otherwise.

Not true.

The right to bear arms, by definition, means anything you can hold.

You cannot own a nuke brah.

Last time I checked you can't hold a cannon but it was definitely protected under the second amendment.

Completely agree its your right. My original post was never to argue you shouldn't own one.

I don't care if you do. If you want one, you should own one assuming you're licensed and its registered. No argument from me.

WALLACE: But what about these technological limitations? Obviously, we’re not talking about a handgun or a musket. We’re talking about a weapon that can fire a hundred shots in a minute,

SCALIA: We’ll see. I mean, obviously, the amendment does not apply to arms that cannot be hand-carried. It’s to keep and bear. So, it doesn’t apply to cannons. But I suppose there are handheld rocket launchers that can bring down airplanes that will have to be — it will have to be decided.

No. This is unacceptable to me. If the purpose of the Second Amendment is to defend your life and liberty against a tyrannical government or any person who threatens it, why should the government know what you own?

You can pull all sorts of supreme court crap that the idiots on there have said. You have to look at the intention of the second amendment. It is to protect against tyranny. You need to have the ability to own whatever the government owns.
