With scouts showing up in La. already, it's time to start posting your sightings. None in Cenla for me yet, but I'll be on the road a lot over the next few weeks.

I have a good friend that lives on a lake that is big into it. Dude has bird houses all over his back yard.

Isn't that what all this is for? Purple Martins?

Yes. Be vigilant in removing sparrows and starlings.

I could sit outside with my pellet gun, watch baseball and drink whiskey. It's a win, win.

Some things I've learned in my failing to house martins:

They NEED a wide open area.
They like to be near buildings/people.
They like to be near water.

But what do I know, I've never been able to attract any.....

Yup.

This is true as well, but plenty nest in places no where near water. Like in my backyard.

Had a scout flying around my place Sunday (Erwinville). Put my Martin house up and had about 100 sparrows on it within minutes
Plugged up the entry holes though so that should handle that until i can get after them with the pellet gun.

LINK
click on the scout arrival study tab!!

My colony usually arrives in March.

Adult male showed up Sunday (Prairieville). A month early so not sure if one of my returning birds or not.
Not sure if it's ok to post a website, but PMCA purple martin conservation association, is an excellent site for those that would like to start a colony.
