I think there are a few different varieties in South Louisiana. I find the ones that bloom earlier tend to be bland & a lot less sweet than the later ones.

I ate a few handfuls last wknd while scouting in CENLA. Hard to resist picking every ripe one you see.

Dewberries and blackberries are in the same genus, rubus.

Blackberries typically have fewer thorns but are much larger and "pokier". The fruit tends to be smaller and not as sweet.

Dewberry thorns are smaller and are like a "fuzz" almost.

However, the plants freely crossbreed, so there are thousands of hybrids that are indisquinguishable from one another.

And FYI, in many parts of the state, rubus is the number one deer browse plant during the winter.
