Purpledevildog, Thanks for the flashback pic and your service to us Murrcans! BTW, we have some M1 Garands, a 1903, an 03A3, an Eddystone, and an M1 carbine that we take out. I a amazed at the accuracy of the old rifles.

I still remember that week at Edson like it was yesterday. We spent 2 weeks on the range. The fist week was "snapping in", learning everything there is to know about the rifle, history, learning how to aim, etc. The second week was nothing but live firing, then on Friday we qualified. I remember at 500 yards I had 7 bullseyes out of 10 rounds. To this day an M14 is my favorite rifle. It is deadly accurate.

Devil dog
How was the equipment control back then? Were people able to acquire their weaponry after service or did the Govt have it on lock down back then?

Eta: thanks for your service

No. When you went to the rifle range you were issued a rifle and when you left the range it was returned to the armory. Every round of ammunition was counted out on issue. When you left the range every single brass shell casing had to be accounted for. In other words the spent shell number had to match what you were issued. So if you've ever watched Full Metal Jacket, when Pyle shoots the DI, that is totally bogus. However, everything else in the first 45 minutes was fact.

178cajun. I have a Bear 45 lb recurve that I will practice instinctive shooting in the back yard. The boys shoot compound bows and they can't get the hang of a recurve. That is some real fun right there ain't it? It will also tear up that forearm if you let it. but overall

Nice! It's giving me a woody. Just checked one out at Bud's Gun. It looks a little shorter than an M14 though.

Real-world reliability is the most important feature any manufacturer can build into a firearm. That’s why it was the first priority when we set about developing the Browning Maxus. The Power Drive Gas System is designed to perform under harsh hunting and shooting conditions with a wide array of loads. But reliability isn’t the whole story. The Maxus delivers 18% less felt recoil for greater comfort, 44% less muzzle jump for more accurate follow-up shots, 19% faster bolt speed and 24% faster locktime than the nearest competitor. Unequalled reliability and features, all found in the finest, most reliable gas-operated autoloader ever to swing on a bird.
