I had a thread a while back when we built this pond. We stocked it a couple of years ago and there were two "albino" catfish in the fingerlings. I put albino in quotation marks because it's eyes do not appear to be red.

Anyway, I never saw them again. We've been fishing the pond and feeding them for 2 years now.

Yesterday I go out there to check cows and feed the catfish for the first time this year and this dude comes up standing out like a sore thumb.

I had almost forgotten they were possibly still in there.

Also of note, the water quality looks great.

I got a couple in the bag I bought as well, haven't seen them since I dumped the bag. Hopefully they are still in the pond, always thought it would be cool to see them when they got bigger

Do you have an aerator and does your pond stay muddy? How big is your pond? Looking at doing something similar to mine. Its 3/4 acre

No aerator. It's in an open field on the side of a hill that usually has a good breeze.

It was muddy the first year or so until the grass took back over around the edges where the dirt work had been done.

Ours is about an acre, but we selected the 3/4 acre catfish pond package. It was like 400 channel cat, 400 chinquapin (Red Ear Shellcrackers), and 10 lbs of minnows.

We don't feed very regularly. Maybe once or twice a week Spring through Fall or when someone visits and wants to see the fish.

Overall it's been very healthy and self sustaining.

Mine has a few stunted bass in it, its overpopulated even tho there seems to be around 20 bass in there. I wonder if I should drain it before throwing catfish in it?

Eta: who did you order thru?

I would because the bass would wreck your minnows and possibly throw off the food chain you're trying to establish.

J M Malone & Son, Inc

Is who we went through, but mainly because they came to our local feed store twice a year. The website isn't very updated, so I'm not sure if they are still in business or not.

We've always gotten a few albino catfish in each batch of fingerlings we purchase. If we ever catch one we put it back.

Last year I had a bad problem with otters and they all but cleaned the catfish out of my pond, all except for one large albino catfish. We still see him zooming around when we feed.

I remember years ago a farmer bred albino catfish only. The idea was the pink filet would be attractive to customers similar to salmon.

Problem turned out they got low survival rates due to predators being able to easily see them

i had otters get in my pond 2 years ago. let me say this, an otter is a better fisherman than any of us could ever hope to be.
i basically had to start from the ground floor

The same.

They got in my pond over the winter of 21-22 when we were in the hospital in New Orleans with the baby for 4 months. Wrecked it. As far as we know only the one albino catfish survived. Nothing would feed. Only thing left were bream and bass. Just didn't have time to trap them. Eventually they left.

I restocked early last year but they came back this winter. One of the otters met an early demise one morning and I had one trap pulled up by the stake so I assume it caught another one. Haven't seen them since. May have to restock the catfish again now.

Right now I am doing my best to hurt the bass population this spring with the hope of getting everything balanced out again.
