Well as a recreational angler, how many politicians have you greased today? Probably not many. You'll get shite on and you'll like it or you'll go fish somewhere else.

Its all PR moves and LA politics. I've seen bills get passed by one, knowing they would get rejected by the other.

I understand your frustration but the reality is LDWF is bound by the laws that congress passes. We have to get congress to act if we want to see actually fair treatment of this issue.

I think that every bank fisherman in Louisiana should keep a photo of this in their pocket. And keep all fish that are gut hooked, even if undersized, and count it toward their limit. And if WLF tries to give them hell, pull out that photo, and say "I'm just trying to feed my family. You been to the grocery store lately? Seen the prices? At least I don't let them go to waste by the thousands"

Out of curiosity - is it about the same percentage bycatch by a troller vs a pogie boat ?

Pogey Boat article

Based on that article
Menhaden-611 million lbs
Shrimp-64 million lbs
—noaa 2020 study for Louisiana

At 10x the catch amount I would assume the by catch is significantly more.

Higher for pogey boats. Trawls have bycatch reduction devices to try to cut down on other species getting caught in the nets. Pogey nets indiscriminately catch everything and by the time the nets get pulled out of the water, everything that got caught in the net has already died of suffocation.

I just checked the AIS and there are 19 F/V's between South Marsh Island and Sabine Pass...all of them are a few miles from the coast....you can also look at Flightaware and see the planes that are taking off from Abbeville and Patterson and look at their routes..... flying over the the boats spotting the fish

Omega Protein and Ocean Harvesters are the main culprits, a few boats from Plaquemines Parish Port and Pascagoula.

Based on the track it looks like the Sea Wasp ( a pogie boat) made a set just west of Rutherford beach. Hope no one had any plans to go there this weekend….

I they would just put some restrictions on them atleast during redfish spawning season… I guess common sense is hard to find up at the capital

This whole thing a complete embarrassment. Louisiana is literally the only state that these guys are allowed to operate. They have been untouchable with our current Governor...and they are giving tons of money to Landry and other candidates. We need one of these guys to stand up and do whats right for our state...

Anyone know enough about campaign finance or election laws to figure who and how much are getting money from Omega and Daybrook? Especially Connick and Hensgens.

I sure they’ve pretty good at hiding it at this point.

Landry will be no different on this than Honor Code. Even his formal statement to CCA made it really clear he’d side the commercials.

Louisiana Trial Lawyers are scum of the Earth, especially when they hold so many of the political offices.

Landry has taken more than $200,000 from one of the Pogie Companies that is easily verified. There is definitely more funneled through their lobbyist to him...

you can read between the lines on Landry's response that he would likely veto any action against the Pogey boats.

CCA interviews candidates on pogie issue

Landry:
I oppose wasteful fishing practices, whatever they may be. Commercial fishing operations must be conducted in a responsible and sustainable way, including the bycatch from the menhaden fishery. This will allow us to maintain Louisiana’s precious natural resources. There must be an accountable balance between commerce and conservation.

I support science-based fishery management. If science indicates that additional regulations on the menhaden fishery will materially improve the health of other species, particularly troubled species like redfish and speckled trout, then as Governor I will support those new regulations.

I would however, not support regulation that harms any commercial fishery that is not supported by science. Just as I have done in opposing unnecessary regulations that hurt our recreational fishing.

Jeff Landry (R)

Wags:
YES. I will support such a limit. I am committed to working together with all parties to implement this in such a way that will protect the coast and these critical resources, enhance the recreational experience and also secure the Louisiana jobs in this industry. By working together, we will get this done.
