In my quest to replace my totaled tahoe, I am narrowing down my choices for tow vehicle.

Tahoe/Yukon/Denali
F150 Crew Cab
Navigator/Expedition
Armada

Are the current options

I dont really know much about the 5.4/6R80 combo, is it reliable?

certain year 5.4s are prone to failure of the spark plug threads, leading to plug ejection.

I hear alot of older clackety clack fords driving by my home ...
What year you talking?

Have you driven an Expedition yet? I had to drive one from Biloxi to New Orleans and didn't care for it. Seemed to drive very "loose", for lack of a better term...it was weird.

The later 5.4's aren't bad, don't seem to be great either though. Don't know much about the trans.

Very reliable. The cam phaser issue is more of an annoyance but using a good 10W-30 instead of 5W-20 helps. 6R80E is plenty tough but like all modern automatics it needs regular drain intervals with factory spec fluid. I've always used full syn 10W-30 year round and there is no issue with this weight being "too thick" for these engines. Ford specs a 5W-50 in the hi-po variants, Mobil 1 15W-50 is a common substitute.

Not yet, just shopping off specs needed at this point. Haven't received the amount of the total loss value yet.

Ford A certified tech and A+ tech in Diagnostics and drive ability.
I pretty much love the triton 5.4 because of all the money I've made working on them if that means anything to you. Worked at Robinson Bros. For 3 years and Hollingsworth for 3. Worked at independent shops afterwards

One of the main gripes with the Expedition is power under load. The 5.4 only makes 310/365.

If you're lookin for a tow rig and mpgs are of no concern, you'd be hard pressed to pass up a Denali with the 6.0 or 6.2.
