A 12' will track better but I downsized to a 10' recently. I use the thing just to do some easy fishing in a few local lakes and it works fine. Much easier load and unload.

My opinion is if you aren't looking to be super serious and out in the marsh and stuff like that, 10' is fine.

I find that doubtful(tracking). How big a boy are you?

Make sure to get the scupper plugs.

Take everyones advice and get the 12. Tracking in a 10 will suck compared to longer kayaks. Also the 12 will probably be faster and much easier to paddle.

This.

The 10 may track just fine. And if you have never paddled a 12+ footer and have no basis for comparison, you might be ok with the 10. But I agree with everyone else that a 12 or bigger is the way to go. The advantages far outweigh any negatives.

My first thought was the same as most, get the 12. It's a better all around platform. Tracks better and more stable.

However, is there any place close by that you could field trial a 10 vs a 12? Then you can decide if it's worth the dollars for tracking and comfort vs the ease of loading.

I've had a few 10's and the models can vary a lot (but not this one)

I keep browsing the 12' yak selection at Academy every time I venture in there. The local Academy had a 12' Heritage Angler which was marked down to $399 at one point. Think it was gone the last time I wandered in there but it's still listed on the web page. Seems to have a flatter bottom and is wider than the 12' Prescador. I tend to favor width and stability over paddling efficiency. Seat on the Heritage sucks arse but at the price you should be able to get a nicer seat. I've wandered out of the price range and I'm eyeballing the Pelican Catch 120 now instead.

This 12' Lifetime is on sale at Wal-Mart for $215 and comes with a paddle. Would be a great begginer Kayak. Im going to order one for me and my son today. Lifetime Site MSRP $549

$215 for a 12' Kayak is too good to be true. Reading a little closer it's 120" not 12'. So in reality it's a 10' yak. Still seems like a good deal though.

Yup just seeing that. I still think its a good deal. No Wal_Mart around me has one though. I would have to try to order it online and get it shipped to m local store.

12' Heritage Angler

I had one of these in the older style (much better seat), before they were carried by Academy. It was a great kayak and even better at that kind of price.

The one at Walmarks and the one on the Lifetime website are different models. Actually looked at this just last week as I was shopping for yaks. Don't know what the actual difference is

Any experience with Vibe kayaks? I'm looking at a Yellowfin which is another 10', but the people who own them really seem to love them.

I ordered the one from Wal-Mart for my son anyway, he's only been asking for a kayak for 2 years or so. If it's not worth a crap Wal-Mart has a good return policy.

My sons Yak, Lifetime Tamarac 120, finally came in Thursday, he splashed it yesterday for the first time on Elmers Island. I must say, for $240 out the door plus a stadium seat I had in the shed this is an excellent Kayak. Tracks well, easy to paddle very stable. Only downfall is the paddle that comes with it. Its light but it flexes a good bit and doesnt have the drip preventers. Definitley reccomend it.

I'm in DFW and would like to stay active in the summer. It's hot as hell outside, so figure kayaking would be a great hobby to take up since it involves water.

What you going to use it for ?

A day of fun paddling or fishing...
A float or exercise....
Just burn off some calories or seeing something worth a look at....

Got to give us more, than I want an activity that gets you wet. A float on the Brazos's, Middle Basque, Guadalupe, Pedernales, the lake? What you ultimately looking to do?

eta: just saw this is a month-late resurrection / never-mind
