I'm in DFW and would like to stay active in the summer. It's hot as hell outside, so figure kayaking would be a great hobby to take up since it involves water.

I've decided on a sit on top and wanted at least 2 storage hatches. Want a stable yak so a beginner isn't always falling out. Also wanted to keep the budget at about $500 or less. This narrows my choice. I really like the Pescador 10 at Academy for like $479 I think. It's 10' long and not too heavy so I can throw in bed of truck. It has 2 storage hatches, cupholder, and 2 rod holders (fishing is not my primary purpose but I may give it a try sometimes... Keeping it real simple. I'm not looking to set up a fishing yak.
Does anyone here have the Pescador 10? Any opinions? Any other suggestions?
Does Academy ever have sales? Any other place I might find a better price?

I thought the pescador was a 12. It was the old wilderness systems tarpon 120 mold. I have the west marine version and it's always served me well.

This one is a 10' LINK

Why? This will be 99% recreational kayaking in Lake Ray Hubbard, White Rock Lake etc. I didn't want longer than a 10 footer so it wouldn't be hanging out the back of my short bed F150 7+ feet, plus it would be easier to handle by myself.

I'll consider longer if there is a good reason though.

Paddling a 10' sucks compared to a 12. The 12 will track much straighter.

Ok, I'll look at 12's too but all the reviews of this particular 10' say it tracks pretty well.

I had a 10ft yak before I bought the 12 ft. It is true. Paddling was more side to side when you really wanted to move. If you are just drifting or not in a hurry it's no big deal. Also make sure you can fit a small cooler behind you. I use that little igloo marine 25qt with a few rod holders screwed on the side.

Also, I wouldn't worry about too much hanging out of the truck if that is holding you back. With the tailgate down, you'll have plenty of room. You can also angle it to get a little more "inside".

Agreed. I used to carry 14' kayaks in my ranger with a 6' bed no issues. And I currently carry a 15' canoe in a short bed Silverado that has a CNG tank taking up 2' of the short bed. That things sticks waaaay out. I use a bed extender but it's never been an issue. I take that canoe out almost every weekend, no issues.

If I were you I would spend the extra 50 bucks and get an Ascend 10 foot. LINK
And if I were you I would kayak off 66 and the part of the lake by Rowlet. The Rockwall and Heath side looks too rough for a kayak.

Paddle Point Park is where I plan to put in at. It's off Miller in Rowlett.

Is the seat nicer? I don't mind spending another $50, but was wondering what makes the Ascend better than the Perception? I looked at Bass Pro yesterday and they had a 10' Ascend in lime green for like $479 I think. I can't find it on their website though, so I'm thinking its an old model maybe?

It does track very well, Yesterday I paddled a the one you linked and a Ocean Kayak Prowler 13, The Perception tracked better and was little more stable to me.

It gets pretty good reviews for an under $500 kayak. I just wanted to hear some first hand experience. I think I'm going to pull the trigger next weekend unless yall think Academy will have a sale on these at end of summer or something. I can wait. It'll still be hot as hell in September

My first kayak was the Pescador 12. For fishing out of, it wasn't the most ideal. But for just paddling around I couldn't ask for a better boat. Light weight, fast, tracks well, and stable enough.

They normally go on sale. Another option would be to look around for places that rent them. They sometimes put them on sale to replace their rentals. If you dont mind a few scratches you can get a good deal.

Just throwing in another option to consider...

It's my first kayak, so I'm no expert. But, Dick's puts the Field and Stream Eagle Talon 12 on sale for $399 pretty often. I've had it a couple of months and I'm quite happy with it. I believe it's actually made by FeelFree which is a fairly well thought of yak company.

That's a nice looking rig for $400.

10' is too short, especially if you are using it for exercise. will track terribly, and you better be light. Pescador is a good model, based on the WS Tarpon mold, but 12' is the minimum, 14' even better.

Well Chedballz stated a little further up that the Pescador 10 tracked better than a 13' Ocean kayak. I'm not really using it for exercise though. More to just get out of the house in the summer and do something in this suck arse heat. I'm not looking at going on miles long treks or racing etc.
