This thread is the place for everything related to birding, and is geared toward those interested in bird conservation. A place to post pictures, ask questions, report sightings, challenge your ID skills, etc.

Probably won't get much traffic. A hobby of mine I guess. Helps me pass the time in the stand. I've got some pics, but not hosted. I suppose i should start a new folder.

Tigris,
This snowy owl that you saw today....what is he perched on?? Thanks for posting the underwings of the rough-legged hawk. That always helps!
I hear ya. When I see gulls flying, I almost just want to turn my head, pretend I didn't see them. They're around the crawfish ponds, esp when the bay is real rough. When I take photos, almost always need help from others to get positive ID. It's a pain.

I facking hate ID'ing sandpipers and similar shore birds. Gulls too. Argh

Where is this coming from?

I saw hundreds of what I figured out was Medowlarks while I was hunting this year. Haven't noticed that many before. They reminded me of a small quail, wonder what they taste like

He was talking crazy in the elephant thread also. One would think that with 7 years to lurk that he would have worked the kinks out of posting...

I was sitting in my stand, and bam! a branch fell and hit my head. Hurt like hell. A few minutes later, bam! again, but this time the "branch" grabbed my orange stocking hat & flew off with it. A damn owl. Don't know if it was a great horned or barred, but gave me a good lickin. I really miss that cap.

Well no point in rushing things in life

The Outdoor Scenery Board. Going through 20 pages of the scenery thread trying to relocate a picture of black-bellied whistling ducks in flight is not the best use of my time. I have very important things to do, like discuss elephants.

That is a tall power pole, probably 40 feet above the ground (used a 400 mm lens for the shot and blew it up). It surprised me that he was that high, I haven't seen a lot of Snowy Owls but usually owls are a lot lower to the ground.
As said I'm not sure this thread will get much traffic, I have the impression that there may be a general interest in birds along with other wildlife but few if any serious birders. The logistics are problematic too with people scattered all over (I live in Georgia). For information two good sites that I'd recommend are
the Birding List Digest where you can see reports from all over the country:
LINK
And eBird where people enter their trip data and you can see both recent sightings and historical patterns of where to try for various species.
LINK
Both are indispensable to me when I'm traveling and want to try for some birds I usually can't see .
Birding suits me nicely as a hobby, a good excuse to get outdoors in some great places and try some photography as well.

Great pic of the snowy. We had one here in the panhandle about 10 years ago. My son got to see it. It was right at home in the white sand dunes.

Been thinking of trapping and drowning 500 house sparrows. They make stocking a bird feeder no fun.

is this just bird watching? Sounds like something that will get you registered as a sex offender.

My sister is into birding. She does it every w/e.
I think she is going to Lake Charles this w/e. I need to notify her of this thread b/c she has tons of pictures.

Birding List Digest
didn't know about this site, thanks. It's easy to navigate, and I found LAbird quickly. Loads of interesting entries.
quote:Do you use a tripod with that? I want to get a lens with greater range, but with the type of birding I do, I really need a handheld.

Dont' know if you remember the picture, but on the scenary thread you posted a sparrow. I compared it with the sparrows in 2 birding books, and still couldn't come up with an ID. Without seeing the breast feathers made it harder. Finally, I just gave up!!

I wonder what happened with the chippin sparrows. Used to get them at my feeder. Haven't seen any in years. Now, it's just white throated with a few juncos mixed in.
